ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) advanced into the consolation semifinal round at the ITA National Indoor Championships on Friday (Nov. 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
After battling game-for-game with Wichita State's Gabriel Laredo and Juan Escalante, the Wolverines struck in the sixth frame to gain a 4-2 advantage. The two teams exchanged another series of games before Jackson and Hung broke the Shocker pair for the second time to put victory in sight with a 7-3 lead. With Hung serving for match point in the 11th game, the Michigan freshman drilled an unplayable serve down the center line to seal the victory.
In singles consolation competition, junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS), listed 78th in the ITA preseason men's NCAA Division I singles rankings, recorded an upset over Pepperdine's 54th-ranked Pedro Rico, 6-4, 6-2, to advance into the consolation quarterfinals. Rubin was eliminated from the tournament after suffering his second loss of the tournament, falling to 18th-ranked Richard Barker from Rice. After losing the first set 6-3, Rubin hung with Barker in the second frame, battling to a 3-3 game score. In the seventh game, Barker broke the Wolverine's serve and surged on to victory, winning the second set 6-3.
