MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) notched 19 kills and established the school record for career kills with 1,273, but is was not enough to lead the University of Michigan volleyball team to a win, as the Wolverines fell 3-1 (25-30, 30-23, 26-30, 24-30) to the No. 22 Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night (Nov. 7) in front of 4,471 at the Wisconsin Field House.
Moore set the record in game two with her eighth kill, surpassing the mark set by Karen Chase (1,261 from 1995-98). The loss marked Michigan's second straight in Big Ten play, dropping them to 8-6 in the conference. In addition, U-M has now lost 15 straight matches to the Badgers and has not won in Madison since the 1992 campaign.
The Wolverines came out firing in game one, hitting .350 (20 kills-6 errors-40 attempts), led by sophomore Candace Gay's (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart HS) seven kills on 10 attempts. The Wolverines held tight with the Badgers until the late stages of the stanza, when UW, with a 24-23 lead, reeled off six of the final eight points to post a 30-25 victory.
Michigan tied the match at one game apiece in game two, cruising to a 30-23 victory. After Wisconsin took an early 5-2 lead, the Wolverines fought back and, with a four-point run, took a 19-16 lead. UW came back to pull within one at 21-20, then U-M went on another four-point run to go up 25-20. After a pair of points by the Badgers, Michigan closed out the match with five of the last six points, including two kills by Gay and game point by Moore, who set the school record for career kills with her 1,262nd career termination. The Wolverines hit .324 in the frame and held Wisconsin to just .125.
In game three, U-M got out to a 4-0 lead and held the advantage for most of the game until Wisconsin put together a seven-point run to take over the game, building an 18-13 lead before the Wolverines could recover. Michigan got within two on a few occasions and fought off two Wisconsin attempts at game point, but the lead was too much to overcome as UW captured the frame with a 30-26 decision.
In game four, the teams got out to an even start and were tied at 10 before Wisconsin scored five of the next six points to take a 15-11 lead en route to the 30-24 victory. With UW leading 29-20, Michigan fought off four match points, but the lead was again too much to overcome as the Badgers closed out the match.
