LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- University of Michigan football assistant coach Terry Malone has been named one of five finalists for the coveted Broyles Award, presented annually to the nation's outstanding assistant football coach. Malone, offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, is the fourth Michigan coach to become a finalist in the eight-year history of the award; Jim Herrmann won the award in 1997.

The 2003 Michigan offense, led by record-setting quarterback John Navarre (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS) and running back Chris Perry (Advance, N.C./Fork Union Military, Va.), the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and a Doak Walker Award finalist, accounted for 5,487 yards of total offense, including a school-record 3,249 passing yards and 2,238 rushing yards. The Wolverines' offensive balance is indicated by the 28 rushing touchdowns and 25 passing scores.
Malone's play-calling highlights included the Wolverines collecting two of the longest drives in school history. Michigan had a 19-play touchdown drive against Notre Dame (Sept. 13) that covered 80 yards and took a school record 10:25 off the clock, and in the regular season finale against archrival Ohio State (Nov. 22) there was an 18-play touchdown drive that covered 89 yards in 7:04. (Note: There have been one 22-play drive, six 19-play drives and two 18-play drives in U-M history.)
On the quick side of scoring offense, the Wolverines used a 31-point fourth quarter to beat Minnesota 38-35 in the greatest comeback in school history as the Wolverines trailed by 21 points, 35-14, entering the final stanza.
In Malone's seventh season at Michigan and second as the offensive coordinator, the Wolverines were 7-0 at home for the second time in history and the second time with Malone on staff (1997). In fact, the Wolverines are 41-4 (.911) at home in the past seven seasons and will be looking for their sixth bowl win in seven games during that span.
The winner of the 2003 Broyles Award will be announced in January at a banquet in Little Rock, Ark. The Broyles Award is named in honor of University of Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles, who during a stellar coaching career with the Razorbacks developed a reputation of producing top-notch assistant coaches.
