Wolverines Open Spring Season at California Tournament

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. -- With rain and inclement weather canceling Wednesday's (Feb. 12) final-day round of the Northup Grumman Regional Challenge, the University of Michigan women's golf team kept its two-day, 36-hole total of 675 (340-335/675) and finished 18th in its first spring tournament.
Sophomore Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) led the Wolverines, shooting 84 on the first day before shaving three strokes for a second-round 81. She finished the tournament tied for 70th with a total of 165.
Senior Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) shot the best Michigan score on the first day with an 83 but slipped to 85 on the second day to give her a two-day total of 168 and a 79th-place finish.
Other Wolverines competing in the tournament included freshman Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), who finished tied for 83rd (86-84/170), fifth-year senior Stephanie Stasik (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado HS), who tied for 86th (87-85/172) and junior Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day), who wound up tied for 88th place (88-85/173).
After taking a commanding lead with a first-day score of even-par 284, Pepperdine held on to take the team trophy despite slumping on the second day with a 314 to shoot a two-day total of 598. Southern Cal took second with a 603 total (296-307) and Oklahoma State rounded out the top three at 607 (294-313). Pepperdine's Katharine Hull took medalist honors with a two-over 144 total (69-75/144) while Arizona's Erica Blasberg (71-74/145) and UCLA's Charlotte Mavorka (68-77/145) tied for second place.
The Wolverines continue their spring season when they travel to Parrish, Fla., Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 24-25, to compete at the Central District Invitational at River Wilderness Country Club.
