ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS), junior/sophomore David Malonson (Lynwood, Calif./Mayfair HS), sophomore/freshman Sean Moore (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) and the 1,600-meter relay team emerged from competition victorious and the University of Michigan men's track and field team had a total of seven top-three finishes today (Saturday, Feb. 22) in the Harold Silverston Invitational at the U-M Track Building. Hosting teams from Calvin College, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Michigan, Hillsdale, Toledo, Waterloo, Western Michigan and Windsor, the Wolverines had success in the middle distances and field events as they prepared for next weekend's Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships.
Michigan had a strong 600-meter run as Cooke and sophomore/freshman Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) finished one-two in the event. Cooke's mark of 1:20.48 doubled as a career best and the Wolverines' third-fastest time this season. Ruff also set a personal record in the run, clocking in just 0.14 seconds later at 1:20.62. Ruff held the lead for the majority of the race, however, a late push from the outside lane allowed Cooke to cross the finish line first.
With a measurement of 23-0, Malonson won the long jump competition for the first time this season. Malonson's jump outdistanced second-place finisher Angelo Finnie of Detroit Mercy by 4 1/4 inches. Freshman Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester HS) placed fourth overall with a personal-best leap of 21-9.
Moore earned U-M's third win of the day with a decisive victory in the mile with a 4:15.48 result, outracing the field by over four seconds in the first mile race of his Michigan career.
The Maize and Blue team of junior/sophomore Nick Meter (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS), Chris Yee (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), David Battani (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) and Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) was victorious as well, winning by more than five seconds.
The 400-meter dash also was a strong event for the Wolverines, who placed three runners in the top six finishers. Sophomore/freshman Kaj Johansson (Honor, Mich./Benzie Central HS) was Michigan's top finisher in second with a personal-best time of 50.06. Battani and Yee followed in fourth and sixth, respectively.
The Wolverines travel to Champaign, Ill., next Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) for the 2003 Big Ten Indoor Championships at Illinois' Armory Track. Saturday's events are scheduled for a 10 a.m. CST start, while Sunday's final day of competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. CST.
