ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head football coach Lloyd Carr announced today (Wednesday, Feb. 5) the realignment of three coaching staff positions effective for the 2003 football season. Carr has appointed Jim Boccher to the coaching staff as the special teams coordinator, Bill Sheridan takes over as defensive line coach and Steve Morrison will handle the outside linebackers.
Boccher, 31, assumes the spot on Michigan's coaching staff previously held by newly appointed Ball State head coach Brady Hoke. Hoke served as associate head coach and defensive line coach for the Wolverines. Boccher has been with the Wolverines the past two seasons, coordinating the special teams last year and the outside linebackers in 2001. Punter Adam Finley was named to the All-Big Ten Conference second team as a punter last season, while kicker Philip Brabbs (Washington), punt returner Julius Curry (Utah) and Finley (Ohio State) earned Big Ten Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Prior to joining the Michigan staff, Boccher spent two years (1998-99) as the special teams coordinator and outside linebacker coach at Central Michigan. He was the running backs coach and special teams coordinator for the Ferris State Bulldogs in 1996, helping them win the MIFC Championship and reach the final eight in the NCAA Division II Championships. Boccher was also a graduate assistant at Rutgers (1995) and Central Michigan (1994). A native of Plainfield, N.J. Boccher graduated from Rutgers University in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science in exercise sciences. While at Rutgers, Boccher was a student coach working with the receivers and the defensive secondary. He also interned with the New York Giants.
Sheridan will coach the defensive line and continue to coordinate the Wolverines' recruiting effort. He was hired by Carr last season to coordinate recruiting and coach the outside linebackers. Sheridan, beginning his 22nd year of coaching in 2003, has spent his entire career working with players on the defensive side of the football.
Morrison returned to his alma mater last year as a video assistant and will now coach the outside linebackers in 2003. Morrison was an All-Big Ten Conference performer and was co-captain of the 1994 Wolverine squad. He played four seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts (1995-98). A native of Birmingham, Mich., Morrison was a two-time Roger Zatkoff Award winner (1992 and 1994) and finished his career 10th on Michigan's career tackles list with 360 stops. He graduated from Michigan in 1995 with a degree in kinesiology.
