Parzuchowski Leads U-M Quintet at Winter Cup Challenge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Five of the six member of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team selected to compete at the Winter Cup Challenge were in action Friday (Feb. 7) at the Las Vegas Sports Center. Senior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) led the Wolverines as his top-eight finish on the still rings earned him a spot in Saturday's event finals.

Parzuchowski earned his first career appearance in the Winter Cup finals.

Parzuchowski, who placed eighth on the still rings (8.950), will be joined in the event finals by volunteer assistant coach and former Wolverine gymnast Justin Toman, who tied for second on the parallel bars (9.250). Toman was a two-time NCAA individual champion on the parallel bars (1999, 2000) during his U-M career.

Michigan's top finishers in Friday's all-around competition were freshmen Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) and Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS). Laury tied for 14th with a 49.950 all-around score that included a tie for 11th on the still rings (8.750) and tie for 15th on the pommel horse (8.600), while Signorelli finished 20th in the all-around (48.950) with a top event finish of 16th on the horizontal bar (8.450).

Also representing U-M were senior Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS) and sophomore Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS). Missing from action was sophomore Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS), due to an injury suffered in the Illinois-Chicago meet (Feb. 2).

Parzuchowski (still rings) and Toman (parallel bars) will compete in the individual event finals Saturday (Feb.8) starting at 8 p.m. PST.
