SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team sent three athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational weekend (March 7-8) at the Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Complex in hopes of gaining additional qualifiers for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships.
Senior/junior Ryan Hesselink (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS), senior Alex L'Heureux (Weedon, Quebec/Palm Beach Gardens HS, Fla.) and senior/junior Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) each ran one event. Hesselink and Stanko took part in the 5,000-meter run on Friday (March 7), while L'Heureux ran in the mile during Saturday's competition.
Stanko posted Michigan's best result in the 5,000 but was unable to better the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 14:15.00 in the event. Stanko's result of 14:26.04 was good for eight place, however, while Hesselink finished in 14:56.67 for a 23rd-place showing.
L'Heureux was a provisional qualifier in the mile this season with a time of 4:04.40 at the Meyo Invitational (Feb. 8), but he needed to improve his standing to assure himself a spot at the NCAA meet. L'Heureux was seventh in the race with a run of 4:05.40.
Michigan will send sophomore Nate Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS), freshman Nick Willis (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley HS), sophomore Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Otsego HS) and freshman Andrew Ellerton (Windsor, Ontario/Confederation HS) to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 14-15 at Arkansas' Randall Tyson Track Building in Fayetteville, Ark.
