WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to Purdue Saturday afternoon (April 12) in its first outside match of the season at Purdue's Varsity Tennis Courts. The Boilermakers (11-6, 5-2 Big Ten) took two of three matches in doubles before posting wins at No. 1 through No. 4 in singles to clinch the team victory.
Purdue earned the first victory of the match at No. 2 doubles, as Paul Rose and Andrew Wakefield teamed up for an 8-3 win over seniors Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS). The Boilermakers clinched the doubles point when Troy Havens and Scott Mayer outlasted junior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and sophomore Josef Fischer (Nuremberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy, Fla.) 8-5 at the top spot. Sophomores Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) prevented the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Sounak Chatterjee and Seth McKinley.
The Boilermakers owned a 2-0 advantage in the match after Wakefield posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jackson at No. 2 singles. Moments later, Rose closed out sophomore David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) to put Purdue in position to win the match. The Boilermakers received the clincher from Havens, who defeated Shaya 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Purdue earned its final point at No.1, as Mayer came back to defeat Rubin 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Michigan (7-11, 1-6 Big Ten) picked up wins in the bottom two slots to avoid the overall sweep. Fischer earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over David Robinson, while Gossain claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Colin Foster at No. 6.
