Michigan Student-Athletes Honored at Award Banquet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department presented its most prestigious academic awards during tonight's (April 14) Athletic Academic Achievement Awards Banquet at the Union Ballroom. Honored were more than 300 Michigan student-athletes who have distinguished themselves academically at the university.
Four-time Big Ten Conference champion and three-time All-America swimmer Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) and four-time All-Big Ten and three-time NACGC/W Scholastic All-America women's gymnast Janessa Grieco (Mahopac, N.Y./Carmel HS) were honored as the BIG TEN CONFERENCE MEDAL OF HONOR recipients. The Medal of Honor is awarded to a graduating male and female student-athlete who has demonstrated the highest proficiency in scholarship, athletics and service to the community.
Greico collected her second award of the evening when she won the PHYLLIS OCKER AWARD, presented to a senior female varsity athlete who has distinguished herself academically in the Division of Kinesiology.
The women's tennis team was recognized for winning the LEADERS AND BEST AWARD given annually by former football player Larry Johnson to the U-M team with the highest team grade-point average. The award carries with it a $20,000 donation by Johnson to the sport.
In addition, the wrestling team (male) and rowing team (female) received the COMMUNITY SERVICE TEAM AWARD in recognition of their efforts in the Ann Arbor community.
