ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team has announced the signing of three athletes to National Letters of Intent during the spring signing period, which began April 16. Prep seniors John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS), Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin HS) and Stann Waithe (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven HS) will join the Wolverines for the 2004 track and field season.
"These three student-athletes will fill in some areas where we need some help," said head coach Ron Warhurst. "Adding two solid quarter-milers and finding an impact hurdler really fills in some gaps. It is still early in the process and hopefully we will have a few more kids join these three."
The fastest high school hurdler in the nation during the 2003 indoor season, Porter posted a season-best time of 7.23 in the 55-meter hurdles. Porter is also ranked among the top three returning performers in the 110-meter hurdles (13.84) and is the reigning New Jersey state champion in the event. Porter also considered Florida State and South Carolina before deciding to enroll at U-M in the Division of Kinesiology.
"Jeff is going to do very well outdoors," said Warhurst. "He'll have a smooth transition into college competition because of his strength. He's a great kid and he loves Michigan."
D'Arcy and Waithe will help fill out the Wolverines' longer distance sprint corps. "Both D'Arcy and Waithe will be able to make a contribution as freshmen," said Warhurst. "They give us some great depth exactly where we need it."
An all-state performer in the 400-meter run, D'Arcy posted a time of 49.37 at the 2002 outdoor state meet. He chose the Maize and Blue over Cincinnati and Cornell and will enroll in the School of Engineering in the fall of 2003.
Waithe is Maryland's Class 1-A state champion, posting a time of 48.50 to win the 400-meter title at the 2002 outdoor state meet. Waithe, who will enroll in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts next fall, picked Michigan over California.
