Wolverines Have Six Players Chosen in 2003 NFL Draft

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The University of Michigan football program had six players selected during the 68th annual National Football League Draft completed Sunday (April 27) at The Theatre at Madison Square Garden. Drew Henson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), Cato June (Washington, D.C./Anacostia HS) and Charles Drake (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester HS) were chosen Sunday, joining the trio of Bennie Joppru (Wayzata, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Victor Hobson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./St. Joseph's Prep, Pa.) and B.J. Askew (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) who were selected during day one of the draft.
Henson, a former U-M quarterback and current New York Yankees third-base prospect, joined tight end Joppru on the Houston Texans roster. Henson was a sixth-round selection by the Texans with the 192nd overall pick of the draft. A three-year letterman (1998-2000), Henson guided Michigan to the 2000 Big Ten championship, completing 146-of-237 passing attempts for 2,146 yards and 18 touchdowns. He led the conference with a 159.35 pass efficiency rating while listing second in passing offense (238.4 avg.) and fourth in total offense (237.8).
June, a safety, was drafted six spots after Henson in the sixth round by the Indianapolis Colts. The 198th pick of the draft, June was a three-year letterman who started 26 contests in the secondary. He completed the 2002 season fourth on the team with 53 stops, including four tackles for loss, two sacks and three pass breakups. June tallied 138 tackles, 10 TFLs, six sacks, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions and 10 PBUs during his career.
June's starting partner at safety, Drake closed out the Wolverines' draft choices with a seventh-round selection by the New York Giants (240th overall). Drake finished second on the team with 74 tackles in 2002, including four tackles for loss, three sacks, four pass breakups and one interception. A four-year letterman, Drake registered 174 career tackles, 12 TFLs, six sacks, eight PBUs and one interception.
Other senior members of the Michigan football team may sign free agent contracts beginning today.
