Michigan Head Coach Kathy Teichert
On the play of medalist Kim Benedict ... "She was very good all weekend and, in fact, has just been playing so well this spring. She has been striking the ball really well, giving her birdie chance after birdie chance. She is a good putter so she is just taking advantage of each opportunity she has. She is swinging the club really well ... her tempo is excellent and her confidence level has really risen. She has been working so hard this spring. Her setup is the best I have ever see it. She is just so technically sound. Her fundamentals right now are the best I have ever seen them."
On the tournament finish ... "I think our top three are doing a great job. We just have to have the bottom three get some scores on the board. They are going to be the key for us to have success. If we can one more person to put up a little better score we can get right back in it. We just need some people to step up. It was another typical Indiana Invitational. The weather has never been that great. We you are playing at 30 to 35 degrees it is basically the survival of the fittest and the survival of the minds. When you keep going you are fine, but when you have to sit around it gets really cold."
On looking ahead to next week ... "I am just looking to have another good tournament. We need to continue to have the top three play well and we need some others to really step up. We need to focus in on making some improvements."
Senior Kim Benedict
On her tournament ... "A lot of people have been telling me that my swing has looked good, and I have been working on it really hard. It's been nice to have positive swing thoughts and to be able to step up to the ball with confidence. I think it was nice to just have that confidence with everything. My chipping was good, my driver and my fairway woods were good and my putting was pretty solid. So all in all I am happy there wasn't a weakness, which is really good."
On her two-under 72 first round, which included seven birdies ... "The seven birdies in eight holes ... yeah, what people don't know was that I was four-over through the first seven holes. I was just thinking, 'I have to at least get a few birdies' and I had no idea I would have two (birdies), a bogey and then five straight (birdies). I made a few long putts and then some short ones. So it was a pretty random round, but I am not going to complain about it."
On Michigan's tournament ... "Today we played well. We had the second lowest score of the day, but we dug ourselves in such a hole that we could not do anything. I think the first round just really shot us in the foot; no one really played well. Then everyone improved, but it was not steady. If we can get a good fourth score in there I think we would be really good. We have three people in there trying to do that, it's just not coming consistently. That is all we really need, we need that fourth score. Hopefully we will get it. I think we have the opportunity to do really well. We keep finishing in the middle of the pack, but we are so close to finishing in the top."
