Men's Gymnast Corrigan Qualifies for U.S. Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With his all-around score of 51.825, University of Michigan sophomore Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) qualified for the U.S. Championships at today's (Saturday, May 17) USA Gymnastics Men's National Qualifier held at U-M's Cliff Keen Arena. Corrigan will compete for a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team at the June 19-22 U.S. Championships in Milwaukee, Wis.

Four other underclassmen on the Wolverines' 2003 squad -- sophomore Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) and freshmen Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS), Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) and Justin Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) -- also participated in the meet. Former Wolverine Justin Toman (1998-2002) and senior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) competed in just two and three events, respectively, having already prequalified for the U.S. Championships.

Corrigan tied for 16th place in the all-around with Willie Ito to earn his spot at the U.S. Championships. Signorelli fell shy of qualifying in the all-around, placing 20th (51.000), while DiGiore, the 2003 NCAA vault champion, narrowly missed a spot as an event specialist, placing third on the vault with a 9.450.

Toman, a volunteer coach with the Wolverines during the 2003 season, is currently a member of the National Team and therefore already qualified for the U.S. Championships. Vetere prequalified for the U.S. Championships by placing third in the all-around at the 2003 NCAA Championships.

Gymnasts who make the Senior National Team will represent the U.S. at the 2003 Pan American Games, scheduled for Aug. 1-17 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the 2003 World Championships, which will be held Aug. 16-24 in Anaheim, Calif.
