ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golf coach Andrew Sapp announced today (Tuesday, May 20) the signing of Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, Bucks, England/Oundle School) and Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) to National Letters of Intent for the 2003-04 academic year. The two join November signee Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School) to give the Wolverines three incoming freshmen.
"We are very excited about this incoming freshman class," said Sapp. "They will bring some very diverse experiences to our program. Kevin, Matt and Will all have the ability to put some red numbers on the scoreboard, and with Michigan hosting the Big Ten Championship in 2004 we hope these three players will help our team win the Big Ten championship at home."
A 2002 graduate of Oundle School, Kendall comes to Michigan after playing junior golf in England. He was a five-year member of the Moor Park Junior team (1998-2003) and a three-year member of the Denham Junior team (2000-03) where he was part of the scratch first team for both squads. During the 2002 season, he was selected to the Hertfordshire under-18 team and the Herts Elite Squad training. In addition he was the medalist at the 2002 Junior Spring Meeting at Moor Park, the 2002 Scratch Cup, the November medalist at Moor Park -- tying the course record with a 62 -- and the December medalist at Denham.
"Will has a wonderful golf swing that creates a lot of power," said Sapp. "He will bring some wonderful experience to Michigan and the ability to shoot some very low scores. We hope he will make an immediate impact on our golf program."
McLaughlin began his high school career at Klein High School in Spring, Texas, before moving to Raleigh, N.C., where he was a 2003 graduate of Millbrook. While at Millbrook, he was a two-time team MVP (2002, '03) and the runner up for the Cap-6 Conference Player of the Year (2003). McLaughlin, a two-time Cap-6 All-Conference first team member, averaged 36.16 per nine holes in 2003 and 37.3 in 2002. He was a two-time medalist runner-up at the NCHSSA 4A Mideast regional, with a 69 in 2003 and a 68 in 2002.
"Matt, who grew up in Spring, Texas, moved to North Carolina after his sophomore year," said Sapp. "He will bring some valuable national experience to Michigan. That should benefit him as we take the Maize and Blue to play from coast to coast next season."
