ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan announced its inaugural Sportsmanship Award winners for 2003, an award introduced by the Big Ten Conference to honor student-athletes for sportsmanship and community service. Senior hockey captain Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb./Central HS) and junior swimmer Maya Mandel (Netanya, Israel/Eldad HS) are the 2003 honorees.
One member of each varsity sports team on the 11 Big Ten campuses was chosen by each institution. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were selected based on observing their sport's rules and intent. The individuals must be fair and respectful to their opponent, and in addition, be enthusiastic about the game, enjoy playing it, and win or lose, do their absolute best at all times. The recipients shall also be active on their campus communities.
A two-time U-M Most Valuable Player and the 2003 CCHA Tournament MVP, Ortmeyer was a two-time Michigan team captain and led U-M to three NCAA Frozen Four appearances. He served as a mentor to elementary school children, working with them on a weekly basis. He has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. Ortmeyer was a sports management and communication major in the Division of Kinesiology.
A junior sprinter on Michigan's women's swimming and diving team, Mandel is enrolled in the College of Engineering, majoring in computer science. She is one of two student-athletes on the university's Advisory Board on Intercollegiate Athletics, comprised of faculty members and prominent members of the community. A native of Netanya, Israel, Mandel is a two-time Israeli national swimming champion.
"For more than 107 years, the Big Ten Conference has remained committed to promoting a healthy intercollegiate athletic environment built on a foundation of fair play. Today's award winners carry on a proud tradition of good sportsmanship that is one of the cornerstones of Big Ten athletics," said Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany.
