Athletes, Coaches Headed to International Competitions

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving program will be well represented in international competitions during the final two months of summer, as 12 coaches and athletes with U-M ties will compete in three different events, beginning with the 10th FINA World Championships July 20-27 in Barcelona, Spain.
Michigan will have three representatives at the World Championships as Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/ Trafalger HS) and Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS) will swim for their native Canada, while former Wolverine and 2000 Olympic gold medalist (200 butterfly) Tom Malchow (1996-99) will don the red, white and blue for the United States.
Head coach Jon Urbanchek will be among the four Wolverines traveling to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, for the Pan American Games, Aug. 10-16. Urbanchek will serve as an assistant coach for the United States. Joining Urbanchek on Team USA will be current Wolverines Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School), as well as 2000 Olympic 1,500-meter bronze medalist Chris Thompson (1998-2001).
Diving coach Chris Bergere will be one of four Wolverines representing the United States at the World University Games Aug. 24-30 in Daego, South Korea. Bergere will serve as an assistant diving coach. Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS), the 2003 NCAA platform diving champion, will join his coach on Team USA, as will Wolverine swimmers Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Brendan Neligan (Briarwood, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS).
