ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football program has been selected second in the 2003 Big Ten Conference preseason poll as voted upon by the media members attending the 32nd Annual Big Ten Conference Football Media Day and Kickoff Luncheon held July 23-24 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.

Jackson becomes the first Wolverine player to receive the early season honor since Charles Woodson gained the recognition prior to U-M's 1997 national championship season. Jackson is a returning All-Big Ten first team selection from last year. He earned All-America honors from the College Football News after collecting a Michigan school-record 18 pass breakups in 2002. A Jim Thorpe Award candidate, Jackson has been named to numerous preseason All-America teams in 2003.
The Wolverines enter their 124th season of gridiron action with 46 returning lettermen, including 13 starters. Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr begins his ninth season at the helm of the program with a 76-23 overall record and 49-15 Big Ten Conference mark. U-M compiled a 10-3 record last season to finish No. 9 in the final Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' polls, ending the season with a 38-30 victory against Florida in the Outback Bowl.
U-M opens the 2003 season against Central Michigan on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Michigan Stadium. The game with the Chippewas begins at 12:10 p.m. EDT and will be televised locally by ESPN Plus.
