Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr joins Fielding H. Yost, Bennie Oosterbaan and Bo Schembechler as the only head coaches in school history to roam the sidelines for 100 career games.
Fifth-year senior defensive back Jon Shaw was named the special teams captain for today's game.
Fifth-year senior John Navarre connected on 19-of-33 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns against Central Michigan and now ranks second in career touchdown passes at U-M with 50. Elvis Grbac (1989-92) holds the record with 71 career touchdown passes.
John Navarre's 245 passing yards against CMU marks the 19th time that he has passed for over 200 yards in his career at Michigan.
On the second play of the game, running back Chris Perry ran for a career-long 63 yards to the Central Michigan eight-yard line. Last season in the opening game against Washington, Perry took the second play from scrimmage 57 yards for a touchdown. The carry was his previous career long.
Senior kicker Adam Finley connected on a 30-yard field goal at 9:16 of the first quarter for Michigan's first points of the season.
True freshmen Garrett Rivas, LaMarr Woodley, Prescott Burgess, Ryan Mundy, Leon Hall and Jerome Jackson made their career debuts against Central Michigan. Woodley was on the field for the opening kickoff, while Rivas kicked the extra point on Chris Perry's touchdown run in the third quarter.
Sophomores Steve Breaston, Larry Harrison, Brian Thompson, Mike Kolodziej, David Harris, Darnell Hood, Carl Tabb, Pierre Rembert, Obi Oluibo, Willis Barringer, Alijah Bradley and Jeremy Van Alstyne saw their first career action. Barringer started on the opening kickoff. Sophomore tight end Tyler Ecker made his Wolverine debut after a two-year Mormon mission.
Junior Mike Mandich made his career debut in the final minutes against the Chippewas, and senior long-snapper Ross Mann made his U-M debut against CMU.
Fifth-year senior defensive back Jeremy LeSueur collected his third career interception in the first quarter. The play led to Michigan's first touchdown.
Sophomore wide receiver Steve Breaston finished the game with 157 all-purpose yards, including three punt returns for 79 yards.
With his start at quarterback, John Navarre joins Rick Leach as the only quarterbacks in U-M history to start four season openers.
Senior Chris Perry rushed for a career-high 232 yards on 22 carries against Central Michigan. His previous career high was 175 yards against Wisconsin in 2002. It marks the fifth time Perry has rushed for more than 100 yards in his career.
With his 33-yard carry in the third quarter, Chris Perry surpassed the 200-yard mark on the day. It marks the first time Perry has rushed for over 200 yards in a game and the first time a U-M running back has gone for over 200 yards since Anthony Thomas' (1997-2000) 228-yard performance at Illinois (Sept. 23) during the 2000 season. Perry's 232 yards break Gordon Bell's (1973-75) record for rushing yards by a Michigan player in a season opener (210 yards).
With 22 rushing attempts against Central Michigan, Chris Perry moved into 13th place on Michigan's career rushing attempts list (495). His 232 rushing yards moved him into 15th place on U-M's career rushing yards list.
Chris Perry's 232 rushing yards against the Chippewas are good for eighth all-time in single-game rushing yards at U-M.
Defensive lineman Jeremy Van Alstyne recorded his first career fumble recovery in the second quarter.
With his 25th play of the game, John Navarre set the school record for career offensive plays with 1,035 plays from scrimmage (rushing and passing). Navarre passed Rick Leach (1975-78), who was in 1,034 plays for the Wolverines. Navarre finished the day with 33 plays and now stands at 1,043 career plays.
With two touchdown catches against CMU, Braylon Edwards matched a career best for touchdowns in a game. It is his third career multiple-touchdown game. Edwards finished the game with five receptions for 78 yards and now has 12 career touchdowns at U-M.
Sophomore wide receiver Jason Avant set career highs in both receptions (3) and receiving yards (26) against CMU.
Junior running back David Underwood scored his third career touchdown at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Matt Gutierrez made his career debut at the end of the third quarter, holding the snap on Garrett Rivas' extra point after David Underwood's score.
Matt Gutierrez completed his first career pass attempt in the fourth quarter, a five-yard pass to Carl Tabb. It was Tabb's first career reception at Michigan.
Matt Guiterrez scored his first career touchdown on his first career running play in the fourth quarter. The one-yard run put Michigan in front 45-7 with 9:03 left in the game. He finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 for 28 yards.
Defensive backs Markus Curry and Jacob Stewart led the Michigan defense with nine tackles each.
