EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team opened its 2003 regular season on a high note Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) as the Wolverines downed No. 22 Loyola Marymount 2-0 at the Michigan State Invitational on Old College Field. It marks the third time Michigan has opened the season with a record of 1-0.
As was the case in 2002 the tandem of Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) and Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) led the Wolverines offensive charge as each tallied a goal and an assist in the Michigan victory. On the other side of the ball, sophomore Peter Dzubay (Slyvania, Ohio/Northview HS) turned away four shots for his ninth career win and fifth career shutout.
Starting his 39th consecutive match, Turpin continued to spark the Michigan offense as he tallied the first goal of the season for the Wolverines off a corner at 50:52. Following a halftime speech by head coach Steve Burns, the Wolverines came out firing, resulting in a pair of early second-half corner kicks.
On Michigan's second corner of the half sophomore Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) lobbed the ball to the head of Cameron, who was able to get a piece of it and drop it to Turpin's feet. Standing three feet from the front of the goal line, Turpin put U-M ahead 1-0 as he sent the ball to the back of the net for his 14th career goal, placing him in sole possesion of second place on the program's all-time scoring list, one goal behind Cameron's leading 15.
Just 59 seconds later Cameron made it a two goal cushion as he found open space in the middle of the field after Turpin drew three defenders on a long run into Lion territory. As the duo entered the Marymount goal box, Cameron received the ball and found himself with only the keeper to beat. One quick move later and the Wolverines had a 2-0 lead with 38:09 remaining in the game.
Senior Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) had the first shot of the season when Cameron served a ball to Turpin in the fifth minute of the match. With open space in front of the goal, the ball slipped off White's feet and bent wide of the net for a Lion goal kick.
The Wolverines return to action Monday (Sept. 2) when they face Xavier at 2:30 p.m. on Old College Field at the Michigan State Invitational.
