KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team continued to roll over teams at the Toyota LV Classic, downing Cal State-Fullerton by a 3-0 (30-20, 30-16, 30-16) margin Saturday morning (Sept. 13) at Tennessee's Stokely Athletics Center. Junior Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) led the Wolverines with 16 kills while senior Erin Moore (Tiffin, Ohio/Columbian HS) recorded 14 as U-M moved to 2-0 in the tournament.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, the Wolverines held the advantage in all areas of the match, hitting .304 while out-blocking the Titans 11.5-5.5. Michigan's defense also held strong, limiting Cal State-Fullerton to just .066, marking the second straight match its opponent has failed to hit at least .100.
As with Friday night's (Sept. 12) match against East Tennessee State, the Wolverines jumped out to a quick lead in the opening game, setting the tone for the entire match. U-M went ahead 21-9 in the opening frame before Cal State-Fullerton mounted a comeback, closing the gap to 24-19. Gandolph helped close the game with a pair of kills as Michigan took six of the final seven points to win 30-20.
The Wolverines continued their dominance in the second game, allowing a Titan to serve more than once on just four occasions as they hit .429 and cruised to a 30-16 victory. Game three was much of the same as only three Titans were allowed to serve twice as U-M built a big lead before scoring six of the match's final seven points to complete with sweep with a 30-16 triumph.
Gandolph finished the match with a season-high .519 hitting percentage and added nine digs and four blocks, while Moore and freshman Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) posted five blocks each. Junior Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial HS) recorded a team-high 12 digs to lead the team and dished out 31 assists in the win.
Every available Wolverine saw action in the match with the exception of redshirt freshman Ashley Buckingham (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS), who is recovering from off-season surgery, and senior Nicole Poquette (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), who was being rested for the Tennessee match.
The Wolverines will wrap up play in the Toyota LV Classic Saturday evening, taking on the host Tennessee Lady Volunteers for the tournament title. Opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
