This Week ...
The University of Michigan men's soccer (2-0) begins the home portion of its 2003 schedule, as the Wolverine welcome Dayton and Evansville to the U-M Soccer Field Friday (Sept. 5) and Sunday (Sept. 7), respectively. U-M will face Dayton in the home opener Friday at 6 p.m. then return to the pitch Sunday for a 4 p.m. matchup with Evansville. The games will be part of a soccer triple header at the U-M Soccer Field, as the Michigan women's soccer team is hosting the Michigan Invitational, prior to each of the men's matches.
Scouting the Opponents ...
Dayton - The University of Dayton men's soccer program is coming off a 2002 season that saw the Flyers go 9-10-1 overall and 4-7-0 in the Atlantic 10 conference. Head coach Dave Schureck heads into his fourth season at the helm of the Flyers and will count on his two captains, senior defender Denny Clanton and junior midfielder Tye Stebbins, to provide veteran leadership for a young but talented team. Dayton returns 22 of 26 players from last years squad including junior forward Chris Rolfe who was named all-region in 2002, as well as sophomore defender Nate Darr, an Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection in '02. Evansville - After taking over for legendary Evansville head soccer coach Fred Schmalz, who retired following the 2002 season, Dave Golan will look to keep the tradition going in his first season at the helm of the Purple Aces soccer program. Sophomore forward Marc Burch returns coming off a 2002 season where he led Evansville with four goals and 12 assists for 20 points. Freshman forward Ian McAuley is already off to a fantastic start with two goals on the young 2003 season, leading the Purple Aces to a 1-0-1 record and first-place finish in the North Shore Classic. Michigan vs. Dayton ...
Dayton holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, as each team has held serve on its home court, with the Flyers winning last year's contest 2-0 at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. Chris Rolfe, tallied the two goals in the win for the Flyers last season. Michigan's lone victory in the series came in 2001 when the Wolverines produced a 2-1 defeat of the Flyers on Ann Arbor Pioneer High School's Hollway Field. Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) netted the game-winner with his first career goal on an assist from brother Robert Turpin (2000-02). It marked the only time in school history a pair of brothers combined to score a goal.
Michigan vs. Evansville ...
The Wolverines and Purple Aces meet for the first time last season and the Maize and Blue came away with the victory 6-2 on Division Street Field in Evansville, Ind. Due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Isodore, the game was moved from its original location and played three hours earlier. That did not slow Jrgen Schmieder' (2002) effort though as the Bavarian junior notched his second career hat trick leading the Wolverines to the 6-2 victory.
In Action Last Week ...
Michigan opened the season on a high note as the Wolverines exited the Michigan State Invitational with a perfect 2-0 record, with wins over No. 22 Loyola Marymount (2-0) and Xavier (1-0) last weekend in East Lansing, Mich. (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). U-M opened the year with last Sunday when they downed the No. 22-ranked Lions 2-0 on a pair of quick goals by Mychal Turpin and Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS). Turpin put the Wolverines on the board for the first time in 2003 as he banged home a header from Adam Bruh (Roselyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) at 50:52. Just 59 seconds later Turpin earned his third point of the match when he set Cameron up for an insurance goal at 51:51. In the second match of the weekend Cameron produced his second tally of the year when he beat the Xavier goalkeeper for the game winner at 65:36. Between the pipes sophomore Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) recorded 180 minutes of scoreless soccer, with eight saves for his fifth and sixth career shutouts.
Topping the Ranked ...
The Wolverines earned their second career victory over a ranked opponent last Sunday (Aug. 31) when U-M defeated No. 22 Loyola Marymount 2-0 at the Michigan State Invitational. The win improved Michigan's all-time against ranked competition to 2-6. U-M's first win over a ranked opponent came on November 2, 2001, when U-M defeated then No. 14 Ohio State 1-0 in Columbus, Ohio. Later that season the Maize and Blue pushed then No. 4 and eventual national runners-up Indiana to triple overtime before falling 1-0 in the second round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament.
Cameron Off To Hot Start ...
Junior Knox Cameron totaled five points helping the Wolverines to a pair of victories last weekend at the Michigan State Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 1). Cameron recorded a goal and an assist in Michigan's 2-0 win over No. 22 Loyola Marymount then returned to score the game-winner the following day in the Wolverines 1-0 defeat of Xavier. It marks the second consecutive year Cameron has tallied at least one goal in each of Michigan's first two games of the season. In 2001 he netted a pair of goals against UC-Santa Barbara and Wright State.
He'll Knox You Down ...
With a five points last weekend at the Michigan State Invitational, Knox Cameron jumped Mike White (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) for the program's career-points lead. Following his two goal, one assist performance in East Lansing, Mich., Cameron now has 41 career points on 17 goals and seven assists. Cameron also heads the Michigan all-time goals scored list with fellow junior Mychal Turpin sitting second with 14.
He Has a Creek ...
Junior Dawson Stellberger (Crested Butte, Colo./Crested Butte Academy) recorded his first career point last Monday (Sept. 1) when he set Knox Cameron up for the game-winner against Xavier at 65:36 of the match. With the ball at near midfield, Stellberger saw Cameron break toward the Musketeer on a dead sprint and sent a ball that met Cameron in mid stride allowing for an easy goal.
Dzubay Keeps Them Quiet ...
Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Dzubay posted his fifth and sixth career shutouts last weekend at the Michigan State Invitational holding both No. 22 Loyola Marymount and Xavier scoreless over 180 minutes of action. Dzubay turned away four shots in each of the two games.
The Book on Burns ...
Head coach Steve Burns is 29-24-3 through last weekend's action at the Michigan State Invitational as the leader of Michigan's varsity program. Last season Burns guided the Maize and Blue to a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament and its first ever appearance in the championship game. Since his taking the helm in 2000, Burns' Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first three years. In the program's inaugural season of 2000, U-M finished with a 6-10 record, while in 2001 his club put together a mark of 10-7-1. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
On the Horizon ...
Michigan again hits the road for a two game set when the Wolverines travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a pair of non-conference matches with North Carolina and UNC Greensboro at the North Carolina Invitational (Fri-Sun. Sept. 12-14) on Fetzer Field. Michigan faces host North Carolina Friday at 7:30 p.m. and kicks off with UNC Greensboro at noon on Sunday.
