Today's attendance of 109,580 marks the 175th consecutive crowd with over 100,000 fans at Michigan Stadium.
Fifth-year senior defensive back Jeremy LeSueur was named the special teams captain for the Houston game.
Jeremy LeSueur moved up in the Michigan career kickoff-return yards list with a 45-yard return off a free kick in the second quarter. LeSueur was previously tied for ninth all-time with Tony Boles (1987-89) with 639 yards. LeSueur now has 29 career returns for 684 total yards and moves into seventh place behind Ron Johnson (1966-68), who compiled 687 career kickoff return yards.
Fifth-year senior quarterback John Navarre passed Elvis Grbac (1989-92) for the U-M all-time lead in career completions. Navarre passed Grbac with an eight-yard pass to Brian Thompson early in the third quarter to record his 523rd career completion. Navarre finished the game with 136 yards passing (13-30) with one touchdown and is now 527 for 973 for 6,304 yards in his career.
Fifth-year senior Spencer Brinton saw time at quarterback for the second straight game.
Fifth-year senior quarterback Mike Kaselitz made his career debut against Houston, handling the snap in the final play of the game.
Senior running back Chris Perry ran for two touchdowns against Houston, scoring on a one-yard run in the first quarter and an eight-yard scamper in the third quarter. Perry rushed for over 150 yards for the second straight game, finishing with 184 yards on the ground and 23 yards receiving. He has scored eight touchdowns in his last three games dating back to the 2003 Outback Bowl (Jan. 1). Perry has rushed for 416 yards (208 yards per game average) in 2003.
Senior defensive lineman Larry Stevens collected his first sack of the season, producing a U-M safety late in the first quarter. Stevens finished the game with two tackles, including a career-high two sacks for a loss of 25 yards.
Junior defensive back Ernest Shazor made his first career start against Houston.
Junior tight end Tim Massaquoi caught a career-long 45 yard reception from John Navarre in the second quarter. His previous career long was a 12-yard reception last season. The play set up Garrett Rivas' 38-yard field goal, which increased Michigan's lead to 15-0.
Junior tailback David Underwood, the lone Texas native on the Michigan team, scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter for his second touchdown of the season and the fourth of his career. The score put the Wolverines ahead 22-0. Underwood rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in his career (108 yards), including a career-long 35-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Junior cornerback Marlin Jackson made his 100th career stop in the first half against Houston today. Jackson finished the game with team-best six tackles to push his career total to 104. Jackson also forced a Houston fumble in the first quarter, setting up Michigan's first touchdown.
Junior wide receiver Braylon Edwards caught a nine-yard pass early in the fourth quarter for his third touchdown of the season. Edwards had four receptions for 50 yards and now has 13 career touchdowns at Michigan.
Sophomore fullback Brian Thompson recorded first career reception, an 8-yard catch in the third quarter.
Sophomore Matt Gutierrez saw time at quarterback for the second straight game, entering the game at 11:28 of the fourth quarter. Gutierrez finished the game with one eight-yard pass in his only attempt.
Sophomore Jeff Kastl made his Michigan debut at quarterback in the final seconds of the game.
Sophomore running back Pierre Rembert scored his first career touchdown on an 18-yard run early in the fourth quarter. The run was also a career long and put Michigan up 43-3. Almost five minutes later, Rembert scored on a five-yard run to cap off the scoring for U-M. Rembert finished the game with 22 yards on thre carries.
Sophomore tight end Tyler Ecker caught an eight-yard pass from Matt Gutierrez in the fourth quarter for his first career reception at Michigan.
Freshman Garrett Rivas recorded his first career field goal at 14:04 of the second quarter. The 43-yard kick put U-M ahead 12-0. Rivas, making his first career start at placekicker, connected on two of three field goals and converted all six of Michigan's extra points for a 12-point game.
Freshman running back Jerome Jackson had a career-long 44-yard run late in the fourth quarter. The run set up Michigan's final touchdown of the game, putting the Wolverines ahead 50-3. Jackson finished the game with 60 yards on five carries.
Michigan rushed for over 300 yards as a team for the second straight game. U-M finished the game with 392 yards on the ground and 144 yards passing for a total of 536 yards.
Today's game marks the first time U-M has had two players finish with over 100 yards rushing each since Sept. 2, 2000, against Bowling Green (Anthony Thomas, 108 yards; Chris Perry, 103 yards). Perry finished with 184 yards and Underwood ran for 108 yards against Houston.
The last time Michigan tallied a safety was at Washington on Sept. 8, 2001.
Michigan's 50-3 win over Houston is the widest margin of victory since the 2000 season, when the Wolverines defeated Indiana 58-0 on Oct. 14.
The last time Michigan scored at least 50 points in a game was at Northwestern during the 2000 season (lost 54-51 on Nov. 4).
Today's game marks the first time Michigan has held an opponent under 200 yards of offense since Oct. 14, 2000, when U-M limited Indiana to 186 total yards.
Houston Postgame Notes
With an attendance of 109,580, Saturday's game was the largest crowd in school history to watch a Cougar football game. Saturday's attendance topped the previous UH best of 106,417 set at Tennessee on Sept. 26, 1998.
With his first-quarter catch (approx. 4:40 mark), wide receiver Chad McCullar recorded the first reception of his collegiate career.
Michigan's Larry Stevens' safety of quarterback Kevin Kolb at the 0:50 mark of the first quarter was the first by a Cougar opponent since North Carolina did it on Oct. 16, 1999, a span of 40 games.
With his reception around the 10:00 mark of the second quarter, wide receiver Brandon Middleton extended his streak with at least one catch to 29 consecutive games.
The Cougars' 50-3 loss to Michigan is its biggest since UH lost 48-0 at Texas on Sept. 23, 2000.
The Cougars' three points scored at Michigan are the lowest by a UH team since a 6-3 loss to Conference USA rival Southern Miss on Oct. 28, 2000.
Center Rex Hadnot made his 25th consecutive start, dating back to Nov. 18, 2000, against C-USA rival Louisville ... Defensive tackle Kade Lane made his 14th consecutive start, dating back to Aug. 31, 2002, against Rice at Rice Stadium ... Safety Jermain Woodard made his 21st consecutive start, dating back to Oct. 6, 2001, against C-USA rival Army.
The following players made their first career starts in a Cougar uniform: defensive back Courtney Brooks, wide receiver Vincent Marshall, wide receiver Leonard Gibson, wide receiver Chad McCullar.
With 392 team rushing yards, Michigan recorded the most rushing yards by a Cougar opponent since LSU posted 433 yards on Sept. 7, 1996.
Michigan's 536 yards of total offense are the most by a Cougar opponent since Conference USA rival East Carolina accumulated 598 yards of offense on Nov. 9, 2001.
Michigan's Chris Perry and David Underwood became the first Cougar opponents to rush for 100-plus yards in the same game since UAB's Thomas Cox and Jeril Dugger accomplished the feat on Nov. 17, 2001.
