ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team dropped a 215.5-191.5 decision to No. 3 Stanford in a two-day, short-course meters dual meet which concluded Saturday afternoon (Jan. 10) in Canham Natatorium. Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) earned a pair of individual victories Saturday and anchored U-M's victorious 400-meter freestyle relay team to lead the Wolverine attack, but the Cardinal outscored the Wolverines 139-104 on the second day to take the victory.

The Wolverines bounced right back in the ensuing race as Vanderkaay captured his third event title of the weekend when he clocked in with a time of 8:05.40 to lead a 1-3-4 finish by U-M in the 800-meter freestyle.
Following Vanderkaay into the wall were Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger HS) and Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS), who placed third and fourth with times of 8:05.74 and 8:07.47, respectively. The 1-3-4 showing by the Wolverines helped them regain the lead, 103.5-96.5.
Dan Ketchum's (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) victory in the 200-meter freestyle helped increase U-M's lead to 115.5-103.5, as the senior captain earned NCAA consideration status as he touched the wall with a winning time of 1:47.94. Sophomore Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) was third in the event with a "B" standard qualifying time of 1:48.90.
Stanford responded with a pair of 1-2-3 finishes in the next two events in the pool to claim a 14 point lead, 135.5-121.5, through five events.

Stanford extended its lead to 170.5-143.5 following the 100-meter freestyle, in which Ketchum turned in a runner-up showing in 49.65. The Cardinal's lead swelled to 183.5-149.5 after the 200-meter backstroke as Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) was the leading Wolverine in the race, placing second at 1:56.43. The time was just 0.34 seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 1:56.10.
Vanderkaay earned his second win of the afternoon when he touched the wall in 3:50.23 in the 400-meter freestyle for his second NCAA consideration clocking of the day. Hurd finished a close second with a "B" standard performance of 3:50.69, pulling Michigan within 27 at 189.5-162.5.
Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown HS) earned his second diving victory of the season with an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark of 338.33 to win the three-meter springboard. However, the score remained in favor of the Cardinal, 196.5-174.5.
After a Stanford victory in the 200-meter breaststroke pushed the score to 209.5-180.5, Michigan ended the two-day dual with a win in the 400-meter freestyle relay, clocking in with an NCAA consideration time of 3:19.39.
Michigan returns to the pool next weekend as the Wolverines take to the road to face Purdue and Indiana. U-M will face Purdue at 5 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 16) in West Lafayette, Ind., and Indiana at 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 17) in Bloomington, Ind.

Michigan Head Coach Jon Urbanchek
On the meet ... "We pretty much won where we thought we would win. We saved everybody for the final relay hoping it would come down to that race, but we did not expected Stanford to go 1-2-3 in the 50 free and 200 IM. That kind of took the wind out of our sails. It pretty much ended up the way it was supposed to be, No. 3 beating No. 6."
On the Big Ten season ... "We are on the road next week at Purdue and Indiana and it will not be easy. The Big Ten has improved significantly over the last few years. We will have some great competition in the Big Ten Conference this year."
