Several Wolverines Compete at Eastern Michigan Invite

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team sent several competitors to the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 11) as the Wolverines continued early season action.
Michigan runners posted three of the top four fastest times in the 400-meter dash. Freshman John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) led the way, placing first in section five and posting the quickest time of the afternoon at 49.25. Freshman Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) was runner-up behind D'Arcy, finishing at 49.35, the third-fastest time in the event. Junior Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Ostego HS) also placed first in his section in the 400, clocking a time of 49.36, which placed him fourth among the 33 competitors in the event.
Michigan's "A" squad in the 4x400-meter relay also ranked first among the field, posting a time of 3:18.04, which came in 1.14 faster than runner-up Eastern Michigan.
In field events, the Wolverines placed three individuals among the top seven in the high jump and three among the top 11 in the pole vault. Junior Darren Adams (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS) and sophomore Brad Miller (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) tied for third place in the high jump, both earning a mark of 6-7 1/2. Sophomore Adam Kring (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) jumped 6-5 1/2, tying him for seventh place.
In the pole vault, sophomore Spencer Dowdall (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs HS) and junior captain Craig Theissen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny HS) both cleared 15-0 to tie for fifth place, and freshman Kevin Day (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) jumped 14-0 to tie for 11th.
The Wolverines will return home next Saturday (Jan. 24) for the annual Red Simmons Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building. Field events are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m., with track events starting at noon.
