ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the 2004 dual match season with a 7-0 sweep of DePaul Sunday afternoon (Jan. 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines took all three doubles matches before surrenduring just two sets in all six singles victories.
Michigan continued its stellar doubles play by taking all three matches from the Blue Demons. The duo of senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) had no problem at No. 1, handing Robert Kotroczo and Sam Davidson an 8-3 loss. Soon after, junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) and freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) teamed up for an 8-5 victory over Mark Henderson and Radek Guzik at No. 2 to clinch the team point. Juniors Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win over George Wang and Will Wang at No. 3.
Making his dual match season debut, sophomore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) gave the Wolverines their second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Will Wang at No. 6 singles. Heller turned in another remarkable performance at the No. 4 position, posting a commanding 6-1, 6-2 decision over Guzik.
Jackson's 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kotroczo at No. 2 proved to be the clincher for the Wolverines, and Hung kept pace with a 6-4, 6-4 win over George Wang at No. 3.
The remaining two matches went to three sets, with U-M prevailing in both to complete the sweep. Freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) provided Michigan with its sixth point with a win over Davidson at No. 5. Peretz claimed the first set 6-2 before Davidson evened things with a 7-6(5) score in the second frame. Peretz concluded the match with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set. Seconds later, Michael Rubin ended his marathon match at No. 1 with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory over Henderson.
