Moos, Owen Collect Falls as Michigan Defeats Spartans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Falls by sophomore/freshman Mark Moos (Lorain, Ohio/St. Edward HS) and fifth-year senior captain Pat Owen (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) propelled the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team past intrastate rival Michigan State, 31-6, on Friday (Jan. 30) in front of 1,607 at Cliff Keen Arena.

Owen, also ranked fourth, notched his third consecutive fall and team-leading ninth of the season, pinning Mike Escobedo 2:02 into the 165-pound bout. Owen scored two quick takedowns before rolling the Spartan wrestler to his back for the fall.
Fifth-year senior captain Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) maintained his undefeated season with a 14-3 major decision over the Spartans' Tony Greathouse at 133 pounds. Dowd controlled the match from his feet, scoring six takedowns while only allowing three escapes to improve his season record to 12-0.
Battling back from an early deficit, junior/sophomore Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) scored a quick escape and takedown in the second frame to take a two-point advantage in the final period against Ryan L'Amoreaux at 149 pounds. Despite giving up two reversals, Churella stayed in front by recording another takedown and a pair of escapes while accumulating 1:01 in riding time.
Senior/junior Jeremiah Tobias (Manchester, Mich./Manchester HS) stepped into the Michigan lineup at 157 pounds and earned an 8-3 decision over Matt McCarty. Tobias spent a majority of the bout in the top position, accumulating 5:54 in riding time and scoring a first-period takedown and two-point near fall.
Sophomore/freshman Nick Roy (Wall, N.J./Wall HS) collected his first varsity win and sealed the win for the Wolverines with a 4-2 decision over Anton Hall at 174 pounds. Roy jumped into the lead with a takedown late in the second period and added another midway through the third to upset the 20th-ranked Spartan.
With the score knotted at three points apiece midway through the third period, sophomore/freshman Chase Verdoorn (Platte City, Mo./Platte County HS) used a double-leg takedown to pull into the lead en route to a 6-5 decision over Jeff Clemens at 197 pounds.
Junior/sophomore Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) capped the Wolverines' victory with a 5-2 decision over Mike Keenan at heavyweight. Wagner struck first in the bout with a reversal early in the second period and added a takedown with just 10 seconds left to put the match away.
Michigan State (1-7, 0-3 Big Ten) collected wins at 141 and 184 pounds as Andy Simmons earned a 4-2 decision over fifth-year senior Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) and 20th-ranked Nate Mesyn defeated freshman Joshua Weitzel (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford HS) 3-0. Forward kept it close against the eighth-ranked Spartan but could not recover after falling behind in the first period, while Weitzel was unable to score, getting ridden out in the second period and giving up a third-period reversal.
The Wolverines hit the road next weekend for a pair of Big Ten duals against Ohio State and Penn State. U-M will square off against the Buckeyes on Friday (Feb. 6) at 7 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio, and face the Nittany Lions on Sunday (Feb. 8) at 1 p.m in State College, Pa.
