IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 9-ranked Unviersity of Michigan field hockey team saw its seven-game winning streak ended on Sunday (Oct. 10) as U-M fell to Iowa 4-3 in overtime at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. The Wolverines (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) held a 3-0 advantage at the halftime intermission but allowed four unanswered goals to suffer their first Big Ten Conference loss of the season.
Iowa's Kadi Sickel ended the game at the 79:23 mark, converting on a Hawkeye penalty corner late in the overtime period to secure the victory. After being held to just a single shot on goal in the first half, the Hawkeyes scored three goals within a six-minute span midway through the second frame to even the score at three goals apiece and set up the extra period.
Michigan opened the scoring early in the contest, tallying two goals within the opening seven minutes to build a quick two-goal lead. Junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) extended her goal-scoring streak with the game's first tally at the 1:32 off a pass from senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS). Sophomore Kara Lentz (Manchester, Mass./St. Paul's School) registered her first collegiate goal just five minutes later -- at the 6:33 mark -- as the Wolverines continued to dominate the early stages of the game. Sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) added to the Wolverines' lead, scoring the third marker of the frame at 21:31 with another assist from Hortillosa.
Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes 17-13 in the contest but was outshot by a 9-5 margin in the second half and overtime frame. Senior Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) made five saves in the losing effort, while Iowa's Barb Weiberg earned 13 stops for the win.
The Wolverines kick off a four-game homestand next Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 16-17) against Michigan State and Maryland. Both games are slated for a 1 p.m. start at Phyllis Ocker Field.
