The Tournament Lineup
The Wolverines will carry five starters with a possibility of one individual at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic. The Maize and Blue has had qualifying throughout the last four weeks and will continue through until the end of the week. Leading the way for a tournament travel spot are: junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist), freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's), sophomore Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS), junior Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic), freshman Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), senior/junior Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS), sophomore Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School) and senior/junior Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS).
Last Time in Durham: Rescheduling Forces U-M to Withdraw from Duke Classic
The last time the Wolverines traveled to Durham, N.C., was three years ago when they played in the 2001 Duke Golf Classic (Oct. 14-15). However the Wolverines were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to their travel schedule. Michigan tallied a team score of 306 Sunday and started the second round, but play was suspended due to inclement weather and scheduled to be completed Monday, followed by the third and final round. The Wolverines finished the second round with a team total of 305 and sat in a three-way tie for ninth place at that point, but the Maize and Blue did not start the third round because they would not have finished in time to make their flight back to Ann Arbor.
Former Wolverine Dave Nichols was in ninth place after two rounds with his 148 total (73-75). Other scores for the Maize and Blue were: former Wolverine Andrew Chapman 77 and 75; former Wolverine Andy Matthews, 78 and 77; former Wolverine Scott Carlton, back-to-back 78s; and former Wolverine Kyle Kilcherman, 80 and 81.
Michigan added the Duke Golf Classic to their schedule after Minnesota's PSI Net Collegiate Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 17-18, was cancelled due to the national tragedies of Sept. 11.
Last Time on the Links: Dore, Vozza Lead U-M to Sixth at Northern Intercollegiate
With three Maize and Blue players in the top 20 individually, the Wolverines had a solid sixth place showing at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19) at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. The Wolverines tallied a season-best 886 54-hole tournament total after team rounds of 299, one-under 287 and 300. The Wolverine duo of Kevin Dore (70-69-75) and Christian Vozza (75-68-72) once again led the Maize and Blue squad as they both tied for seventh with one-under 215 54-hole tournament totals. Playing as an individual, Rob Tighe tied for 16th with a 219 total (71-77-71). Other Wolverine totals include: Matt McLaughlin, tie for 33rd (78-74-72/224); Brian Ottenweller, tie for 54th (76-76-80/232) and Mark McIntosh, 68th (81-78-81/240).
Michigan Gets Team Round in the Red
Michigan's second round team total of one-under 287 at the Northern Intercollegiate is the first time the Wolverines have gone under par this season. The last time the Wolverines were under par as a team was at the end of last season when the Maize and Blue tallied a two-under 282 in the final round of the 2004 Big Ten Championships (May 8-9).
Seeing Even More Red Numbers
With five Wolverine rounds under par at the Northern Intercollegiate, the Maize and Blue has seven total in the first two tournaments of the season. Kevin Dore had the fourth and fifth rounds of his career below par with his two-under 70 in the first round and his three-under 69 in the second round; Christian Vozza recorded his fifth career round below par with his four-under 68 in the second round; while Rob Tighe had one-under 71s in the first and third round. During the entire 2003-04 season, the Maize and Blue recorded eight red numbers.
Duo Snaps Top 10 Drought
The last time the Wolverines had two players finish in the top 10 was during the 2000-01 season, at the Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4, 2001). At the Northern Intercollegiate, Kevin Dore and Christian Vozza both tied for seventh. In addition, the last time the Wolverines had three players finish in the top 20 was at the 2004 Furman Intercollegiate (March 26-28). Including Dore and Vozza's tie for seventh, Rob Tighe tied for 16th, playing as an individual giving the Maize and Blue three in the top 20 this weekend.
The Duo Keeps It Rolling
Dating back to the last season, in six of the last seven tournaments Kevin Dore and Christian Vozza have finished first or second among all Wolverine players in tournament play. Dore has taken an early lead in scoring average with a 72.83 per round average, while Vozza is right behind at 73.50.
Make it Eight Now
After his tie for seventh at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19), Kevin Dore has now finished as either the top Wolverine or second team position in the last eight U-M tournaments. He has played in 14 straight tournaments since coming to Ann Arbor and has finished as the top Wolverine five times.
McLaughlin Lowers Career Numbers in Season Opener
After leading the Wolverine starters at the Radrick Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 11-12), Matt McLaughlin lowered his 54-hole tournament best total by five strokes with a 221 total. His prior best was 226, which he had twice C 2003 Franklin Street Trust Invitational and 2004 Puerto Rico Classic. McLaughlin has finished as the top Wolverine in three career tournaments.
