SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 22 University of Michigan men's soccer team lost a 3-0 decision tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 13) at No. 12 Notre Dame. The Irish scored at 14:11 and then three minutes later at 17:41 to open up an early two-goal lead. U-M goalkeepers Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) and Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) split time in net, combining for five saves during the game. The loss drops Michigan to 7-3-2 on the season.
Michigan came out firing and created the first scoring opportunity of the game in the first minute of play. Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) beat the Irish defense to the touchline and sent a pass across the mouth of the goal by Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio./Archbishop Moeller HS). Trybula, however, was unable to get a touch on the ball, leaving the score at 0-0.
Minutes later, Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatly HS) sent a shot at the Notre Dame net which Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) redirected. Blanks' shot hit off the inside of the far post and the Irish were able to clear the ball.
The Irish answered the Michigan attack with a pair of goals at 14:11 and 17:41 to take a 2-0 lead. Justin McGeeney received a through ball to beat the Michigan defense and fired a shot from five yards to tally the score. Then, just three and a half minutes later, Luke Boughen tacked on UND's second goal from 15 yards out.
The Wolverines' lone scoring chance of the first half came from a header by Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) in the 37th minute. The Michigan defender sent the ball toward the Notre Dame goal off a restart, but UND goalkeeper Chris Sawyer made the save and the score was 2-0 at the half.
The Michigan defense tightened up in the second half, but the Wolverines were still unable to convert on their scoring opportunities. Midway through the second half, Blanks had a breakaway attack, but his shot was a little low and was saved by Sawyer.
Hall and Bruh also had scoring chances in the second half that narrowly missed the Notre Dame goal. Hall missed a header high off a corner kick and Bruh sent a free kick less than a foot wide of the Notre Dame goal. However, with less than 10 minutes to play, the score was still 2-0 in favor of the Irish.
With less than five minutes to play, the Irish closed out the game with a goal by Nate Norman at 85:53. Norman sent a shot from the penalty kick area to the back of the Michigan net to seal the win for Notre Dame.
The Wolverines return home after a six-game road trip to face Big Ten rival Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 10) at 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "We played very well today. We had a young team on the field that was in a position to win against a very good, Top 10 caliber team in Notre Dame. We had four great scoring chances in the first half and then three more in the second half. The team knows that if it keeps creating good scoring chances like that and keeps working hard that the goals and the victories are just around the corner."
On how to prepare for Michigan State ... "I just point to this team's competitiveness. This team has a lot of heart. At halftime today, we talked about what it means to wear a Michigan jersey, and they responded in the second half. It is going to be a big game and a good battle. We know they will bring their best side and we have to be able to match that effort."
