U-M Dominates Singles on Final Day of Wolverine Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team completed competition at the 2004 Wolverine Invitational with a dominating performance in singles against Michigan State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines claimed victories in all but one of the eight matches played against the Spartans.
Sophomore Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) turned in another impressive performance with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Brian Compton to get things started for Michigan. Senior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) kept things rolling with an easy 6-2, 6-0 decision over Anthony Stefani for his second straight singles win of the season.
Seniors David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) provided the Wolverines with two more straight-set wins over MSU. Anving posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Michael Flowers, while Fischer took care of Adam Monich, 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) notched his first victory of the year soon after, defeating Joseph McWilliams, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) then completed his 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback over Camerson Marshall on the adjacent court.
In the last match remaining on the courts, freshman Joe Cariello (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill HS) earned his first collegiate victory by overtaking Mike Brown in a super-tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(8).
The Wolverines host the 2004 ITA Midwest Regional Championships beginning this coming Thursday (Oct. 21) and running through Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the Varsity Tennis Center. Draws and match times are TBA.
N O T E S
The Wolverines finished the three-day event with an overall singles record of 12-10 (.545) and a doubles mark of 2-3 (.400).
