EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its third straight game Friday afternoon (Oct. 22), losing 2-1 to Michigan State at Old College Field. The Spartans earned their first goal with five minutes left in the first half, then added another score in the 69th minute en route to the victory. With the defeat, the Wolverines fall to 9-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the Big Ten Conference.
It was a competitive battle on the defensive end during the first half of action, as both teams combined for just seven shots. Michigan State's first scoring opportunity came with 16 minutes left until the break, as Abby Shepherd sent a shot from just outside of the box high and out of play. Michigan answered with a blast from sophomore Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) from a similar position six minutes later, but MSU goalkeeper Erin Carlson slapped the ball out of danger. The ensuing corner kick by senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) found the foot of freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), but her attempt sailed wide of the right post.
The Spartans found the back of the net with 4:55 remaining in the first half, as Dana Voorheis took a pass from Lauren Zacharski before drawing sophomore Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) out of the net and putting it past the U-M goalkeeper to give MSU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Wolverines came out of the break with the intensity on offense, applying pressure on Michigan State's end in the opening minutes of the second half. U-M looked to even the score with 35 minutes left, but freshman Kandice McLaughlin's (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) shot off a Tanchon corner kick went high over the crossbar.
Michigan State gained a two-goal advantage with 21 minutes to go in the game. Tuura came out and was unable to get a firm hold on a loose ball, and Zacharski put it in the open net for the insurance score.
U-M halved the deficit with 5:02 left, as Tanchon's direct kick found its way through traffic and into the lower left corner past Carlson for the Wolverines' lone goal of the contest. Unfortunately, Michigan was unable to break past MSU's defense in the waning minutes of the game and the Spartans escaped with the one-goal victory and a full point in the Pontiac Challenge Cup standings.
The Wolverines return to action next Thursday (Oct. 28) when they close out their home schedule against No. 1-ranked Notre Dame. The match with the Fighting Irish is set for a 3 p.m. start at the U-M Soccer Field.
