U-M won its 40th game in 52 matchups with Purdue (40-12).
The Wolverines improved to 14-8 all-time against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Ind., and are 11-6 at Ross-Ade Stadium.
Michigan has opened Big Ten play with a 6-0 record for third time in Lloyd Carr's 10 years as head coach.
The Wolverines won their 11th straight Big Ten Conference game dating back to last season's six-game winning streak to claim the 2003 outright title.
U-M improved to 2-0 against nationally ranked teams this season and claimed its 35th all-time win against an AP ranked squad under Lloyd Carr. It was also Michigan's 125th victory all-time vs. AP ranked squads.
Michigan improved to 8-1 against Purdue when both teams enter the game ranked in the Associated Press poll.
Sophomore cornerback Leon Hall preserved the win with a fumble recovery on Michigan's sideline with just over two minutes remaining in the game. He also added one interception to collect 10 pass breakups this season. He has a PBU in seven of eight games.
Freshman tailback Michael Hart surpassed the 200-yard rushing barrier for the second straight week, joining Jon Vaughn (1990) as the only Wolverine backs to achieve the feat. Hart rushed 33 times for 206 yards. He rushed 15 times for 68 yards in the first half.
Hart has gained 100 yards in three straight games and four times overall this season.
Hart scored a touchdown for the fifth straight game. He had his first career receiving TD at Purdue, catching a screen pass from Chad Henne and following his blockers 25 yards for the tying points in the first quarter (7-7 at 7:40 mark).
With his two-yard carry on Michigan's third possession of the game, Hart became Michigan's all-time leading rusher among true freshman running backs. Hart surpassed the record of 748 yards held by Ricky Powers (1990).
Senior inside linebacker Lawrence Reid led the defensive effort with a season-high nine tackles and two pass breakups against Purdue.
Senior tight end Tim Massaquoi caught a career-high five passes for 60 yards at Purdue. He caught two passes that converted third downs for the Wolverines.
Massaquoi caught a 24-yard pass from Henne to convert a third down on Michigan's second-quarter field goal drive. It was Massaquoi's longest pass reception of the season.
Junior Steve Breaston had a season-best 54 punt return yards at Purdue, returning punts 25, 26 and three yards.
Senior defensive end Pat Massey picked up Michigan's first special teams block of the season on kicker Ben Jones' 44-yard field goal try to end the first half.
Sophomore outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley collected a career-best two sacks against the Boilermakers. Woodley sacked and stripped Kyle Orton on third down and added a 10-yard sack on the Boilermakers' final drive of the first half.
Senior co-captains David Baas and Marlin Jackson made their 35th career starts at Purdue. Baas started 30 games at left guard and the past five games at center, while Jackson started seven games at free safety last season and the remaining 28 contests at cornerback during his career.
Fifth-year senior punter Adam Finley was the Wolverines special teams captain at Purdue.
