This Week
The University of Michigan men's soccer team will start a four-game home stand before hosting the Big Ten Championship on Nov. 11-14. The Wolverines will start the home stretch with a match against Akron on Friday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. and then face Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at the U-M Soccer Field.
Scouting the Opponents
Akron -- The Zips are 10-3-3 overall with a 3-1-2 mark in the Mid-American Conference under 12th-year head coach Ken Lolla. Ross McKenzie and Alex Odwell led Akron with 13 and 12 points, respectively, and goalkeeper Justin Christafaris has 53 saves and a 0.72 goals against average. Michigan fell in an 1-2 affair at Akron last season in the only meeting between the two schools. Akron on the Web: www.gozips.com.
Penn State -- The Nittany Lions are 8-3-5 this year with a 1-3-1 Big Ten record under 17th-year head coach Barry Gorman. Chad Severs leads Penn State with 21 points on nine goals and three assists and goalkeeper Taylor Conrad has 55 saves and a 1.23 goals against average. Michigan is 1-5 against Penn State with the only victory coming last season in a 4-2 decision. Penn State on the Web: www.gopsusports.com.
U-M Splits Big Ten Road Games
The University of Michigan men's soccer team split a pair of Big Ten road games this week, topping Wisconsin 2-1 in overtime on Friday, Oct. 22 and falling 2-1 in overtime at Northwestern. Against Wisconsin, Michigan got back on the winning track with a sudden victory goal by Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS). Blanks scored the game-winning goal at 98:40 to give Michigan the victory and its first Big Ten win of the year. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Wolverines.
At Northwestern, the Wildcats held a 1-0 lead at the half, but a penalty kick by Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatly HS) knotted the game at 1-1 at 87:58. The Wildcats, however, sealed the victory with a sudden-victory goal at 94:13. The loss dropped Michigan to 8-5-2 overall and a 1-3-0 mark in Big Ten Conference play.
Big Ten Leaders
Michigan's offense has come alive during the Big Ten season and the Wolverines lead the conference in points per game (4.75), goals per game (1.50) and assists per game (1.75). The Wolverines also have a number of individuals that sit atop the conference ranks. Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) is tied for the conference lead with a pair of assists and goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) is fifth with 16 saves, but leads the Big Ten with 5.33 saves per game.
Well-Aged Bruh
In Michigan's match against Northwestern, Adam Bruh started in his 50th game for the Maize and Blue. He also scored his second goal of the season on U-M's first penalty kick of the year. In his career, Bruh has played in 52 games with 50 starts and tallied 33 points on five goals and a school-record 23 assists.
For the Record
Adam Bruh handed out the game-winning assist in U-M's 2-1 overtime win against Wisconsin. For Bruh it was his second assist of the season and the 23rd of his career. The 23 assists are a school record and stand five above the next closest Wolverine.
We Play to Win the Games
With U-M's 2-1 overtime win against Wisconsin, starting goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) earned the 25th victory of his career. Dzubay holds the U-M record for career wins with a 25-10-2, including a 5-2-0 mark this season.
Nearing a Milestone
With three saves against Wisconsin and five more in U-M's match at Northwestern, Peter Dzubay upped his career save total to 194 and is just six shy of becoming the first Wolverine to reach the 200-save plateau. Dzubay entered the season as the U-M career record holder with 164 stops and leads the team with 30 saves this season.
I'M Just Trying to Help You Out
With a pair of assists against Wisconsin, Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) tied a career-high. Turpin has accomplished the feat three times in his career and all three have come against the Badgers. He also had two assists against Wisconsin on Oct. 20, 2002 and Oct. 21, 2001. With the two assists, Turpin now has 14 points this season to lead the Wolverines and a school-record 82 points in his career.
Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Mychal Turpin fired two shots on goal against Northwestern to tie the U-M career mark for shots on goal. Turpin now has 83 shots on goal, tying him with teammate Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) for the record.
Hecker Scores Again
Steve Hecker (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) scored his second career goal for Michigan in U-M's 2-1 overtime win at Wisconsin. This season, the freshman has played in 14 games with nine starts and has scored five points on a pair of goals and an assist.
The Golden Child
With his golden goal that gave U-M a 2-1 overtime win against Wisconsin, Trai Blanks scored his first goal of the season. In 15 games this season, Blanks has four points on one goal and a pair of assists. The win also gave Michigan its first Big Ten victory of the season.

The Book on Burns
Head coach Steve Burns is 41-31-4 in four seasons as the leader of Michigan's varsity program. Last season Burns guided the Maize and Blue to a second-place finish in the Big Ten and U-M's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Since his taking the helm in 2000, Burns' Wolverines have bettered their record in each of his first four years. Prior to Michigan soccer being granted varsity status on March 26, 1999, Burns was the head coach of the Michigan club team since 1993. Under his leadership, Michigan posted a 121-51-26 mark (.677 winning percentage) and made six consecutive appearances in the national club championship tournament. The team won back-to-back national championships in 1997 and 1998.
On the Horizon
Michigan will wrap up the regular season with home matches against Oakland on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. and against Ohio State on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. The Wolverines will then prepare to host the Big Ten Championship on Nov. 11-14.
