ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team posted the fastest time in 10 of the 11 swimming events en route to a 126-112 victory over Ohio State on Friday evening (Nov. 12) at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines won eight of the first nine swimming events before exhibitioning their competitors in the final two races.
Leading the way for U-M were two-event winners Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS), Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), with each achieving at least one NCAA 'B' standard.
Brady won the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA consideration time of 23.47, leading a 1-2-3 sweep by the Wolverines, and later led another U-M sweep with first place in the 200-yard backstroke, touching in an NCAA consideration time of 2:01.50 that was more than five seconds faster than Justine Mueller's (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) runner-up time (2:06.68).
Brady also swam the butterfly leg on U-M's victorious 400-yard medley relay team, teaming with Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose), Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt) and co-captain Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) to win the first event of the meet in 3:51.21.
Gilliam swept the distance freestyle events, starting with a dominating effort in the 1,000-yard freestyle, in which her time of 9:45.89 put her nearly a half minute ahead of runner-up Nicole Maglich of Ohio State (10:13.97). Gilliam completed the sweep with another runaway victory in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking an NCAA consideration time of 4:49.44 to win by nearly 14 seconds.
While Gilliam handled the longer freestyle races and Brady the 50-yard sprint, Smith took top honors in the other two freestyle events. Smith posted an NCAA consideration time (1:48.98) to win the 200-yard freestyle, then clocked 51.42 to place first in the 100-yard race.
Other highlights for the Wolverines included diver Elyse Lee's (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) runner-up finish in the one-meter springboard with an NCAA zone qualifying total of 278.78, a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley by Mueller (2:04.32) and Michelle Uhlig (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area HS), and Elsa Larson's (Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.95) as an exhibition competitor. In addition, the U-M team of Smith, Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS), Gilliam and Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Mercy HS) closed the meet with the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:29.39).
