ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- All of the favorites prevailed at the University of Michigan wrestling team's annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Sunday (Nov. 14) at Cliff Keen Arena as the Wolverines solidified its starting rotation for the 2004-05 campaign. After preliminary matches were held in practice throughout the preceding week, the intrasquad featured the final round at seven different weight classes.
The day's competition opened at 133 pounds, where the graduation of All-American Foley Dowd has left a open spot for a new face in the U-M lineup. Freshman Craig Gillison (Arcadia, Mich./Benzie Central HS) recorded a pair of decisions and 2:15 in riding time to earn a 5-2 decision over sophomore Jim Shutich (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS), sweeping the series 2-0.
The 141-pound final came down to a third-period escape as junior/sophomore J.R. Muldoon (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) pulled away from junior/sophomore Brian Ong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) with just second remaining to earn a 6-5 victory. Muldoon had built the early lead with takedowns in the first and second periods, but Ong evened the score with a takedown of his own in the final frame.
At 149 pounds, sophomore/freshman Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) scored three first-period takedowns and added another in the third frame en route to a 8-3 decision over fifth-year senior Jeremiah Tobias (Manchester, Mich./Manchester HS).
The Wolverine captains -- fifth-year senior Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward's HS) and senior/junior Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS) -- cruised to victories at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, as Bertin pinned sophomore/freshman Jeff Marsh (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) at the 3:09 mark and Churella shut out freshman Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS) by a 5-0 margin.
At 197 pounds, senior/junior Willie Breyer (Oxford, Mich./Oxford HS) -- who at 184 pounds started for the Wolverines during the 2002-03 season -- tallied a takedown in each frame and accumulated riding time to earn a 7-0 victory over fifth-year senior Steve Heleniak (Galesburg, Mich./Franklin HS) to sweep the series 2-0. Senior/junior Greg Wagner (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) wrapped up the competition with a 8-4 decision over senior/junior Tony Grygorzyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS).
Michigan will return to the mat on Thursday (Nov. 18) for its season-opening dual meet against Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Leeman-Turner Arena.
