Walter, McGuire Receive Great Lakes Regional Honors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's cross country junior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) was named NCAA Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year, while head coach Mike McGuire earned regional Coach of the Year honors, as named by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (WICCCA) Tuesday (Nov. 16).

This is the third season in a row that Walter has earned a postseason award. As a freshman, Walter was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while as a sophomore she placed first at Big Tens, earning Big Ten Athlete of the Year honors. Walter finished third in the regional last season and 18th nationally, earning All-America accolades.
McGuire received regional Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in his 13-year career after guiding Michigan to its third straight Big Ten title and the program's fourth regional title. McGuire was first named regional Coach of the Year in 1992, also earning the honor in 1993 and 1994. He was also named the 2004 Big Ten Coach of the Year, his sixth honor and the third in a row.
McGuire has coached 16 cross country All-Americans, four regional Athletes of the Year and one individual national champion while leading the Wolverines to six top-10 national finishes, including a fourth-place finish in 2003 and a second-place result in 1994.
The No. 4-ranked Wolverines travel to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., to vie for a national championship on Monday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. Michigan finished second in the White Division at NCAA Pre-Nationals in October, tallying the third fewest points of all teams competing.
