Brady, Gilliam Lead Michigan to Second at Indiana Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished second with a three-day total of 823.5 points at the eight-team Indiana Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines captured two event titles and placed second in one relay on the final day (Sunday, Nov. 21) to finish 34 points behind the host Hoosiers (870.5) in the final standings.
Sophomore Susan Gilliam (Los Angles, Calif./Bolles HS) got Michigan off to a quick start with an outstanding performance in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Gilliam shattered the NCAA automatic qualifying standard and turned in a season-best time of 16:17.43 to claim first place. Gilliam touched the wall more than 27 seconds ahead of runner-up Marta Stepanczuk of Utah (16:44.95). Sophomore Annie Stein (Longmont, Colo./Germantown Academy) took eighth place with a time of 17:21.89.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) made it two in a row for U-M with a first-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke. Brady swam to an NCAA consideration and season-best time of 1:59.91 to edge out Kentucky's Jessica Siegele (2:00.01). Freshman Katie Smith (Plano, Texas/Hebron HS) placed ninth at 2:05.50, while junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose) touched in right behind Smith at a season-best 2:06.17 for 10th place.
The Wolverines placed one swimmer in the championship final of the 100-yard freestyle. Sophomore Katie Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) clocked in with an NCAA 'B' standard and season-best time of 51.14 for fourth place. Junior Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) finished 11th in a season-best 52.75, while senior Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) took 16th with a season-best mark of 53.16.
The Maize and Blue had three top-10 finishers in the 200-yard breaststroke race. Sophomore Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) grabbed third place with an NCAA consideration and season-best time of 2:17.69. Junior Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) touched in 2:20.50 for sixth place, and freshman Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt) finished ninth with a season-best time of 2:21.42.
Sierra was the top Michigan finisher in the 200-yard butterfly event, as she earned fourth place with season-best mark of 2:06.10. The Wolverines placed four swimmers in the consolation final, with freshman Wendy Shieh (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) leading the quartet with a season-best time of 2:07.28 for ninth place.
In the platform diving competition, sophomore Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) was the top U-M scorer with a third-place total of 330.90. Freshman Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) took seventh place (303.15).
In the final event of the invitational, the 'A' squad of Lindsey Smith, Gilliam, Mueller and Brady swam to a season-best time of 3:26.52 to place second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Michigan's 'B' team of Egnatuk, Seskevics, Katie Smith and Sierra closed out the scoring with a sixth-place showing in the race (3:31.21).
Michigan will be back in action in two weeks at the Eastern Michigan Invitational (Dec. 3-4) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Several members of Wolverines will take part in the U.S. Open that same weekend (Dec. 2-4) in San Antonio, Texas.
