Niemeyer Named to Academic All-America First Team

TOLEDO, Ohio -- ESPN and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today (Monday, Nov. 22) that University of Michigan senior Matt Niemeyer (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs HS) has been named to the ESPN Academic All-America first team for men's soccer. Niemeyer, a mechanical engineering and pre-med major, is the first Wolverine to earn Academic All-America honors.
This season, Niemeyer has captained the Wolverines to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and an 11-7-4 overall record. He is one of three U-M students who will represent the entire student body at the Rhodes Scholar state-level competition later this month. In his career, Niemeyer has earned three Academic All-Big Ten Conference citations (2001-03) and is a four-time recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award.
The Wolverines play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a match against No. 2 seed Indiana on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 7 p.m. The match will be played at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
