COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 13 Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinals Friday night (Nov. 5) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The host and No. 2 seed Buckeyes (15-3-3) scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, then added two more scores in the opening five minutes of second half to eliminate the third-seeded Wolverines (11-8-2).
The Wolverines were credited with the first shot of the contest, as senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) sent a header wide right in the opening minute. The Buckeyes' first shot found the back of the net, as Lisa Grubb sent a perfect cross to Danielle Dietrich, who headed the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) for a 1-0 lead with 42:25 remaining in the half.
Minutes later, sophomore Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) collected a ball at the right endline and passed it to junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS), who turned and lofted a shot on target, but OSU goalkeeper Emily Haynam got a hand on the ball and deflected it out of play.
Ohio State took a two-goal lead just 15 minutes into the game. Lara Dickenmann sent a through ball to a wide-open Dietrich in the box and she ran uncontested toward the U-M net. Tuura made a huge save on an attempt at the left post, but the ball deflected off freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) and went into the right corner of the goal to put Ohio State on top 2-0 with 31:24 left in the half.
The Wolverines nearly trimmed the lead in half, but Heaton's blast from inside the box with 27 minutes to go in the half was snagged out the air by Haynam. The Buckeyes continued to apply pressure inside Michigan's 18-yard box, as Dietrich sent a header into the arms of Tuura.
Michigan was presented with another quality scoring chance one minute later. Freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) made a nice tackle near the top of the box, and Heaton collected the loose ball before firing a shot at the left post that was stopped by Haynam.
The Ohio State offense continued its attack in the 20th minute as a Melissa Miller's direct kick found its way into the goal for a 3-0 Buckeye lead. Freshman Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) nearly cut the deficit to two goals soon after Miller's score, but her header off a corner kick hit the right post.
Michigan headed to the locker room on a positive note, as senior Laura Tanchon (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) found herself with the ball at the top of the box and sent a shot past Haynam and into the right side of the goal to cut Ohio State's lead to 3-1 going into the halftime break.
The Buckeyes quickly extinguished U-M's momentum by scoring a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Grubb headed a ball past Tuura off a free kick from Miller with 40:40 left in the game, and Colleen Hoban gave OSU another score off a header less than two minutes later.
The Maize and Blue cut the lead to 5-2 with 34:13 left in the game, with Dobbyn scoring her team-leading eighth goal off a Tanchon corner kick. Freshman Carrie Lacroix (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley HS) tried to bring Michigan one goal closer, but her attempt from the top with 15 minutes left was just high of the crossbar. The Wolverines were unable to break through the OSU defense in the closing minutes, as the Buckeyes earned a three-goal victory and a trip to Sunday's (Nov. 7) championship match against No. 1 seed Penn State.
The Wolverines hope to secure their eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced Monday afternoon (Nov. 8) at 4 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
