ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped its regular-season finale today (Saturday, Nov. 6) in a 2-0 decision to Ohio State. Two second-half goals proved to be the difference for the Buckeyes as Michigan was shut out for the third straight match. The loss drops Michigan to 9-6-4 overall with a 1-4-1 mark in Big Ten Conference play.
Both teams were sluggish throughout the first half, with neither squad able to gain an advantage in the early going. In the 22nd minute, Ohio State created the first scoring opportunity of the game when it found Kevin Nugent with a through ball to beat the Michigan defense. As Nugent wound up for the shot, U-M goalkeeper Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview HS) came off his line to make the save.
About 10 minutes later, the Wolverines had a chance of their own to take the lead. After an attempt by Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley HS) was blocked, Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) fired shot from inside the OSU box. However, Buckeye goalkeeper Ray Burse dove to his left to make the save.
On the ensuing corner kick, Bruh served the ball into the box, but a header by Chris Glinski (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) carried over the crossbar and out of bounds.
Ohio State came out aggressively in the second half and nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute of play. After a long cross from the right sideline, OSU's Justin Cook fired a shot from the left post but Dzubay was there to make the save and preserve the 0-0 tie.
The Buckeyes took the lead at 47:27 with a penalty kick by Cook. After a long cross by Ohio State to the right post, Michigan was whistled for dragging down the attacker from behind, resulting in the penalty kick. Cook sent the ball the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, Michigan began to pick up its play but was unable to score the equalizer. At 75:34 Ohio State took a two-goal lead on a goal by Nugent. After receiving a through ball to beat the Michigan defense, Nugent sent his shot to the right side for the goal. The Wolverines were unable to get on the board in the final 15 minutes of the match.
Michigan will prepare for the first round of the Big Ten Championship where it will face Ohio State as the No. 7 seed on Thursday (Nov. 11) at 2:30 p.m. The entire Big Ten Championship will take place at the U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "I am extremely disappointed in the fire in our belly for what, statistically, was a relatively even game. We did not show the fire in our belly against what is arguably our biggest rival. I am extremely disappointed with myself and our coaching staff that we couldn't get that out of our players today."
On where the team lost the game ... "I think it was more the will to win. In the first half, it was an uninspired performance by both teams. In the second half it looked like Ohio State said, 'It's time to win. We're in Ann Arbor, we might as well do that.' We couldn't respond. It looks like that with eight of our last 10 games in overtime, this team has nothing left in their legs right now. We'll give them the appropiate time off and get ready for seeing this same team in the first round of the Big Ten Championship."
On how to get ready for OSU next week ... "We take two days off. We give them Sunday and Monday and work them real hard on Tuesday. We'll taper off on Wednesday and be ready for the game on Thursday."
NOTES
• U-M's streak of holding opponents without a goal was snapped today. The streak ended with a school-record 357:27 scoreless minutes by the Michigan defense.
