ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened its 2005 season Saturday night (Dec. 18) with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad at Cliff Keen Arena. The Blue team defeated the Maize team 207.550-195.600, with senior co-captain Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) of the Blue team winning parallel bars, high bar and the all-around with a score of 53.30.
Corrigan and senior Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) got the Blue team off to a strong start on the floor exercise with scores of 9.0 and 8.80, respectively. Both showed powerful tumbling, with Umphrey unveiling his new double-twisting double back. For the Maize team, junior Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) was the top floor performer of the evening, scoring a 9.30 on a great routine. Sophomore Andre Hernandez (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) added a solid score of 8.80. After one event, the Blue team held the lead 35.30-34.60.
On the pommel horse, junior Andrew DiGiore (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) recorded the top score for the Maize team, notching an 8.70 with a clean routine. Freshman Paul Woodward (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS) led the Blue team -- and all competitors on the event -- with a score of 8.80. His smooth swing and good form helped the Blue team maintain its lead after two events with a score of 68.50-67.90.
Moving to the rings, the Maize team made a strong showing on the performances of senior co-captain Chris Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) and junior Gerry Signorelli (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell HS), who scored 8.40 and 8.70, respectively. Umphrey posted the event's top mark, scoring a 9.25 and helping his Blue team extend its lead, 101.75-100.80.
Both teams performed well on the vault, with freshman Daniel Rais (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) of the Blue team notching the event's top score of 9.40. Umphrey contributed a 9.30 for the Blue, just ahead of Bottke's 9.20 for the Maize team.
On the parallel bars the Maize team was at a disadvantage, having only three competitors' scores to count toward its total, to the Blue team's four contributing scores. Signorelli led the way for the Maize team, posting an 8.60. Corrigan notched the highest score of the night on any event with a 9.50, complete with a stuck double-pike dismount.
In the final rotation on high bar, the Maize team made up ground with solid scores of 9.0 and 8.90 from Signorelli and Gatti, respectively. The Blue team answered with senior Dave Flannery (Niwot, Colo./Niwot HS) scoring an 8.50 and Corrigan tying his evening-high mark of 9.50.
The Wolverines begin the regular season Saturday, Jan. 8, when they travel to Chicago, Ill., for the Windy City Invitational at 7 p.m. CST.
