YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team finished in first place at the Eastern Michigan Invitational for the second straight year, accumulating 1,091 points after the final day of competition (Saturday, Dec. 4) at Jones Natatorium. The Wolverines continued their tradition of excellence at the meet by winning 11 of the final 13 events to finish ahead of eight other teams in the final standings. The host Eagles finish second with 976 points.
Michigan began the meet in winning fashion, capturing the 200-yard medley relay title. The 'A' quartet of junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose), freshman Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), sophomore Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) and senior Tracy Egnatuk (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) touched in nearly four seconds ahead of U-M's 'B' squad at 1:45.86.
Freshman Justine Mueller's (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) victory in the 400-yard individual medley (4:29.43) was the first of four consecutive individual titles for Michigan. Sierra nearly made it five straight for the Wolverines, but Wayne State's Katie Harrigan touched the wall just .05 seconds ahead to claim first place in the 100-yard backstroke (58.24). Michigan got back to its winning ways in the 800-yard freestyle relay, as Mueller, Seskevics, Sierra and senior Amy McCullough (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) took first place with a time of 7:41.80.
In the first event of the evening session, the quartet of Brady, Egnatuk, McCullough and Seskevics claimed first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
