PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior/junior captain Ryan Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi HS), a member of the University of Michigan wrestling team, was named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week on Wednesday (Dec. 8) in recognition of his performance at the Cliff Keen Invitational.

Churella was one of four U-M individual champions as the Wolverines captured the team title (148 points) for the second time in four seasons. The Wolverine is 10-1 this season since moving up to 165 pounds, and owns a pair of individual tournament titles -- Cliff Keen Invitational and the Body Bar Invitational (Nov. 20). His only loss this season came against defending NCAA champion and top-ranked Troy Letters of Lehigh.
The weekly distinction is the first for the Wolverines this year and the second for Churella during his three seasons at Michigan. He earned the first conference weeky honor of the season in 2003-04 -- on Nov. 5, 2003 -- after capturing the top prize at 149 pounds in his season debut at the Eastern Michigan Open. In addition to claiming Big Ten weekly accolades, Churella was also deemed Wrestler of the Week by themat.com, the official site of USA Wrestling.
The Wolverines kick off the home portion of the 2004-05 campaign with a non-conference dual meet against Cleveland State on Friday (Dec. 10). The dual -- U-M's final competition before the holiday break -- is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at Cliff Keen Arena.
