Wolverines Dominate Singles Action in Win Over Furman

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team earned its seventh dual match victory in eight tries, defeating Furman 5-2 Sunday afternoon (Feb. 29) in a neutral-site meeting at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Wolverines (7-1) dropped the doubles point for the second straight match but rebounded with victories in all but one singles match to claim the team win.
The Paladins (0-6) claimed doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 for the first point of the day. Junior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) were the lone doubles winners for U-M, defeating Scott Kahler and Kevin Lackey 8-2 to prevent the sweep and improve their season record to 5-1.
Michigan put the match away with straight-set victories in five singles matches. Junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) improved to 6-2 on the season with a 6-4, 7-6(4) defeat of John Chesworth at No. 1. Freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) picked up his sixth dual match victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Allen Simmons at No. 3. Freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) remained undefeated (8-0) in his dual match career, bettering Ben Pauluhn by a score of 7-6(4), 6-2 at No. 4.
Rounding out the U-M winners were Peretz, who defeated Brian Crook 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5, and junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola), who picked up his fourth straight victory with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Lackey at No. 6.
The Wolverines have two weeks off before traveling to Muncie, Ind., on March 13 for a meeting with Ball State. The match is slated for a noon start at the Muncie YMCA.
