LAFAYETTE, La. -- Cajun first baseman Phillip Hawke hit two homers and 3B Dallas Morris drove in six runs leading host Louisiana-Lafayette to a 16-5 win over the University of Michigan in college baseball action Friday night (March 19) at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Hawke drilled a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to snap a 1-1 tie and hit a solo homer off Michigan starter Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS). Brauer (0-2) went 2.2 innings and took the loss. Morris tied the game at 1-1 with run-scoring single in the first inning, had a two-run single in the sixth and launched a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
The Wolverines (5-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) led off the game with a single to center. He advanced to second on a hit-and-run groundout by junior OF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) and to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) singled to left-center to drive in the run.
The lead lasted just three batters, and after four batters Louisiana-Lafayette (12-6) led 4-1 on Hawke's three-run homer, his third round-tripper of the season.
The Wolverines scored in the third as freshman CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) opened the inning with a triple, his first career extra-base hit, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Getz. Sophomore/junior catcher Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) hit his first career homer in the sixth inning.
The Wolverines scored twice in the seventh as Rose reached on a single and Getz reached when he bid for extra bases was dropped. With runners on second and third with nobody out Michigan scored on a sacrifice fly by Butler and a run-scoring single by junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS).
Junior/sophomore LHP Ali Husain (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS), the fourth Wolverine pitcher of the game, faced the minimum three batters in the eighth, turning a double play and collecting a strikeout as the only pitcher to not allow a run.
Junior/sophomore LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS), still on the comeback trail after missing a year and a half due to injuries, allowed three runs and recorded five strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of work.
Rose, Kunkel and senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) were the Wolverines with two hits in the game.
The Wolverines face Harvard on Saturday evening (March 20, 6 p.m. CST) in a game played at Louisiana-Lafayette. Senior RHP Bobby Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS), with a 1-1 record and a 9.49 ERA, will be on the mound to face the Crimson.
