STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 42 University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the Big Ten Conference season with a 4-3 loss to No. 74 Penn State Saturday afternoon (March 27) at the Sarni Tennis Center. The Wolverines (8-3, 0-1 Big Ten) were unable to pick up a victory in any of the three doubles matches, and the Nittany Lions (10-4, 1-1 Big Ten) secured three wins in singles action to clinch the overall match.
Penn State used a pair of 8-3 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the first point of the day. Malcolm Scatliffe and Roddy Cantey completed the sweep, outlasting senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) 8-6 at No. 1.
Michigan quickly evened the match after Jackson dominated Cantey 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 to break a six-match losing skid. However, the Nittany Lions responded with a pair of straight-set victories at No. 4 and No. 6 to come within one point of the match. Freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) fell to Todd Stecko 6-4, 6-1, while sophmore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) was dealt a 6-4, 7-5 loss by Bradley Hunter.
Junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) provided the Wolverines with their second point, defeating Ryan Berger in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 5. Unfortunately, Penn State clinched the match at No. 1, as Scatliffe came back to defeat junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Hung ended the day with a gritty win over Clint Keithly at No. 3. After squeezing by Keithly 7-6(4) in the first frame, Hung surrendered the second set in another tiebreaker 6-7(5). Hung left no questions unanswered in the third and deciding set, posting a 6-1 score to seal the win.
The Wolverines close out the weekend against No. 18 Ohio State on Sunday (March 28) in Columbus, Ohio. The match is scheduled for a noon start at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
