SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Five members of the University of Michigan men's track and field team recorded solid performances at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday (March 6) at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. The annual meet gives competitors one last chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Already an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles with his first-place performance at the Big Ten Championships, freshman Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin HS) earned a fourth-place finish in the event, clocking a time of 7.90.
Junior Nathan Taylor (Courtenay, B.C./Georges P. Vanier HS) matched his personal best, set last weekend at the Big Ten Championships, in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.76. Taylor was just 0.04 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Junior Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) was the runner-up in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 1:51.20, one second shy of the provisional standard.
In the field events, freshman Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area HS) and junior/sophomore Darren Adams (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS), both fresh off top-four finishes at last weekend's Big Ten Championships, competed in the triple jump and high jump, respectively. Neither athlete was able to match his mark from the conference meet, as Whitehead jumped 50-5 1/4 and Adams cleared 6-8 to both place seventh.
Michigan will wrap up its indoor season next weekend (March 12-13) at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
