Qualifying for the NCAAs
Based on results from the 2003 NCAA Championships, Zone C will send 11 divers to the national meet this year. To guarantee one of those 11 spots a diver must either finish in the top four on the one-meter, the top five on the three-meter or the top two on the platform. Once a diver has qualified for the NCAA Championships on an event, that diver would then dive the next events as an "exhibition" diver. If an exhibition diver finishes high enough to qualify for the championships, the next diver listed in the same event would qualify.
A Brief Look Back on the Diving Season
The trio of Wolverines qualified for the NCAA Zone C Diving meet after strong performances throughout the regular season. All three athletes set season-best scores on both the one-meter and three-meter boards at the Nike Cup (Nov. 20-22). In addition, all three divers posted qualifying marks in both events at the Eastern Michigan Invitational (Dec. 5-6) and Michigan Invitational (Jan. 16-17).

Last Year at NCAA Diving Zones
Michigan sent four divers to last year's Zone C Diving Meet at Miami University's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatics Center, but none was unable to secure one of the four NCAA Championship berths. Tealin Kelemen posted U-M's top finish in all three events, placing 14th on the three-meter (416.40), 11th on the one-meter (487.70) and seventh on the platform (3.45.45). Alexis Goolik, Emily Koglin (Heyworth, Ill./Normal University) and Kelly Vander Kuyl (1999-2003) also competed in all three events for the Wolverines.
Last Diving Meet: at the Big Ten Championships
Michigan's success of the platform diving board was responsible for placing the Wolverines in position for their 14th Big Ten championship on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. With U-M trailing Penn State 566.50-532.50 with two events remaining, a quartet of Michigan divers supplied the team with 34 points in the platform competition to narrow PSU's gap to just two points with one event left. Tealin Kelemen scored 345.20 in the platform diving finals to take fourth place and gain 15 points, while Alexis Goolik helped the Wolverines inch 12 points closer to the lead with a seventh-place score of 328.30. Ellen Van Cleve and Emily Koglin placed 11th and 16th, respectively, to account for the other seven points. Michigan went on to win the 400-yard freestyle relay and clinch the team championship, 604.50-590.50, over the Nittany Lions. Kelemen was also U-M's top finisher on the one-meter (274.70, sixth place) and three-meter (513.30, fifth place) diving boards at the championships.
Bloomington Tea Party
Tealin Kelemen looks to cap off a spectacular senior season at Michigan. Kelemen closed out her career at Canham Natatorium with a victory on the three-meter board (309.10) against Northwestern (Jan. 23) after taking top honors on the one-meter board (303.30) at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 16-17). Kelemen, who has earned Big Ten Diver of the Week three times this season, swept the one- and three-meter events at the Nike Cup (Nov. 20-22), posting scores of 546.80 on the one-meter springboard on the first day before taking the top spot in the three-meter board on the final day with a score of 521.45. Earlier this season, Keleman earned winning scores of 267.35 in the one-meter event and 304.80 on the three-meter board in a double dual meet against Florida State and Michigan State at Canham Natatorium.
Head Diving Coach Chris Bergre
Michigan head diving coach Chris Bergre is in his second season at the helm of the Michigan diving program. Prior to joining the Maize and Blue, Bergre led the diving program at his alma mater, LaSalle University. Bergre coached his first Big Ten champion last season, as Michigan men's diver Jason Coben earned the conference gold medal in the platform diving competition at the 2003 Big Ten Championships and went on to tie for the NCAA platform title. Most recently, Coben helped the Wolverines to a runner-up finish at this year's Big Ten meet with conference titles on the one-meter and platform diving boards.
Michigan in the National Rankings
The Wolverines hold down the 16th spot in the final College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division I dual meet rankings, released Feb. 26. Defending national champion Auburn remains at No. 1, while conference foes Wisconsin (No. 9), Penn State (No. 11), Indiana (No. 12) and Minnesota (No. 25) round out the Big Ten representation in the national poll.
