PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team claimed the college division title and qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 4x400-meter relay on the final two days of competition at the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday (April 23-24) at Franklin Field. The Wolverines also added a pair of top-five finishes in the 4x800 and distance medley relays to highlight the Wolverines' two-day performance.
The 4x400m foursome of freshman John D'Arcy (Northmont, Ohio/Clayton HS), junior DarNell Talbert (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel HS), freshman Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) and junior Seth Waits (Grand Rapids, Ohio/Ostego HS) clocked a time of 3:10.48 to lead the five-team field in the event final. During the preliminary heats on the previous day, the U-M squad blazed a season-best 3:09.85 to qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional, bettering the qualifying standard by 1.01 seconds.
Michigan's 4x800-meter and distance medley relays also registered top-five showings -- both in the Championship of America division -- earning season-best performance to place fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Sebastien Lounis (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm HS), sophomore Andrew Ellerton (Windsor, Ontario/Confederation HS), fifth-year senior Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and junior/sophomore Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) combined to record a time of 7:23.79 in the Wolverines' second 4x800m of the season, shaving 20.89 seconds from their first effort at the Florida State Relays (March 18-20).
With nearly the same lineup for the distance medley relay, the foursome of Ruff, senior captain Chris Yee (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), Cooke and Ellerton, clocked a time of 9:42.19 to round out the top-five, bettering the previous outdoor-season best by 48.82 seconds.
